Is the Oscar ceremony at the heart of the good or the bad place for Eleanor, Tahani and co?

A campaign has started to have this year’s Oscars ceremony hosted by the cast of The Good Place – in character, rather than as actors Ted Danson, Jameela Jamil, Kristen Bell and their co-stars.

The campaign started after E! News captioned footage of Jamil at Monday’s ceremony as “Kamilah Al-Jamil” – the name of Jamil’s character Tahani Al-Jamil’s sister in the Netflix comedy. Kamilah is Tahani’s sworn enemy in the show, and it was such a mistake by E! News that fans speculated if it was actually a deliberate mistake.

Jamil herself laughed off the error, saying on Twitter: “This is legit the funniest thing I have ever seen. What a joyous mistake. Tahani would DIE!”

It has led to many fans of The Good Place asking if the idea could be taken further, asking if the cast should all appear at the Oscars in character to host the ceremony.

The Oscars has yet to announce a replacement for Kevin Hart, who was forced to withdraw from hosting after homophobic tweets written by the comedian emerged.

The Good Place is currently nearing the end of its third series, with the 11th episode The Book Of Dougs released by Netflix today (January 10). The final two episodes – Chidi Sees The Time-Knife and Pandemonium – will be screened over the next two Thursdays.

It stars Bell as self-confessed “white trash” Eleanor, who is surprised to wake up in Heaven. Ted Danson plays Michael, the godlike overseer of “The good place”, with D’Arcy Carden as Janet, Michael’s all-knowing android assistant, William Jackson Harper as Eleanor’s philosophy lecturer Chidi, Jamil as socialite neighbor Tahani and Manny Jacinto as a wise silent monk. They try to avoid being sent to “The bad place” by demons conspiring against them.

The Oscars has yet to comment on speculation about Hart’s replacement ahead of the ceremony on February 24 at Hollywood’s Dolby Theater. There have been increasingly strong rumors that the show won’t have a host at all. The only previous time that happened, in 1989, was a famed flop, with an 11-minute musical medley featuring Rob Lowe taking the place of the traditional hosts’ opening monologue.

There have also been rumours of having more than one host. This was common for the Oscars in the 1950s, but hasn’t happened since Chevy Chase, Goldie Hawn and Paul Hogan presented the show jointly in 1987.
