The Guernsey Christmas Lights in St. Peter Port are 100% funded by charitable donations (mostly by the town traders) and they have been since the first string of bulbs went up. The problem is that the charity that looks after them (Festive Decor) has run out of money. A huge fund raising campaign is being launched in September 2007 to try and encourage individuals, families and businesses to become a "Friend of the Lights". Festive Decor must raise £60,000 this year or there will be no Christmas Lights in town.
The new chairman of the charity, Martine Ellis, has set up this group to raise awareness of the fact that the lights are funded 100% by donations (the States contribute NOTHING) and co-ordinated (put up, taken down, stored, fixed etc) by volunteers.
