What it is to be a Two-Spirit?

Two-Spirited people have a long history with most of Turtle Island’s Nations. Before first contact with the Europeans, First Nations people across Turtle Island recognized the special people given the responsibility of carrying two spirits. Very often, we were the visionaries, healers, the medicine people. 2-Spirits were respected as vital parts of the societies of our ancestors. There are individuals documented in our history, men who dressed as women and took husbands and of great women warriors who took wives and carried the bow.

Sometimes it meant a dream. A young woman who dreamt of warriors or hunters’ weapon would know her course. Young boys who preferred the company of women, cooking instead of going on the hunt, were also born for a different reason than most. People did not interfere with this. Indeed, this was within the realm of the wisdom of the Creator. The Great Mystery creates all beings for a reason, and two-spirited people are no exception.

~Text borrowed from Gilbert Deschamps in the document "We are part of a Tradition: A guide on two-spirited people for first nations communities"~

So live your life that the fear of death can never enter your heart. Trouble no one about his or her religion; respect others in their view, and demand that they respect yours. Love your life, perfect your life, and beautify all the things in your life. Seek to make your life long and its purpose in the service of your people. Prepare a noble death song for the day when you go over the great divide. Always give a word or sign of salute when meeting or passing a friend, even a stranger, when in a lonely place. Show respects to all people and grovel to none.

When you arise in the morning give thanks for the food and for the joy of living. If you see no reason for giving thanks, the fault lies only in yourself. Abuse no one and nothing for abuse turns the wise ones to fools and robs the spirit of vision. When it comes your time to die, be not like those whose hearts are filled with the fear of death, so that when their time comes they weep and pray for a little more time to live their lives over again in a different way. Sing your death song and die like a hero going home.
