The Real ID Act of 2005 turns our state driver’s licenses into a national identity card at a cost of over $20 billion dollars, infringe privacy, and impose major burdens on taxpayers, anyboy renewing a drivers's license, seniors, immigrants, transgender people and state governments – while doing nothing to protect against terrorism.
Right now there's a great opportunity to stop the Real ID Act in its tracks, by combining a national campaign to file comments with the Department of Homeland Security by their May 8 deadline. We think that if we can get 100,000 comments filed, the combination of a broad show of opposition with the state-by-state battles (Maine, Idaho, Arkansas, and Washington have already decided not to participate, and New Hampshire, Arizona, Missouri, South Carolina, Montana, Minnesota and others are all heading in that direction) will spur Congress to act and repeal Real ID.
We'll be using this group to get the word out about opportunities to act, as well as to discuss and coordinate activity on MySpace and sync up with things happening elsewhere, so please ... get involved in the forums, and invite your friends! To keep up with Real ID news in general, please check our blog and the ACLU's Real Nightmare site.
And please make sure to file your comments with the DHS ; 100,000 seems like a lot -- but if we all start acting now, we can make it happen.
PS: Thanks to Sonya Hipper for the logo -- and to Bill Scannell of UnrealID for allowing us to use his artwork as well in the group pics! |
