We
Christian followers of Paramahansa Yogananda
are not asked to give up the religion in which we were raised,
therefore forgiveness is ours through the sacrifice of

Kumbha Mela
Who will cry for the rainforest? This is the question the
Holy Spirit now wants me to ask America. 1/2 of all the species on Earth live there and it
will all be gone in 40 years. While millions of
Americans donate 10% of what
they earn to TV evangelist (It never ceases to amaze me that educated people will believe that a loving God would send his children to an eternal hell to burn) and Bush spends billions in Iraq the Rainforest dies. Our nation and our money could save the rainforest but we are too shortsighted. When will America wake up? Clinton balanced the
budget and supported programs to protect the environment. The republicans fuss about big government and get back into office and the national debt goes through the roof! How many times will you let them swindle you before you get it? Have you noticed the price of gasoline rise since Bush took office? He's an oil man you know? One
thing right-wingers count on is the peoples stupidity. Just
shout "The gays are coming" and you will get re-elected for
sure!
Fall 2002 update- Come on
America, what are we saying to the world with this vote? Our
environment doesn't matter? Our environment is not worth the time or effort? Our generation will be judged by history! The Earth, our Mother, is sacred as is all of God's wonderful creation.
Now that 30
years of environmental protections
have been systematically dismantled, now that our reputation as a Christian nation has been tarnished in an illegal war, perhaps we
might want to consider limits on executive power.
As a mouthpiece and a tool for
the super-rich and as a demagogue for the evangelical right Bush has been very
successful. As the cost of essentials such as fuel and groceries rises, as the gap between rich and poor grows ever wider, we see our
nation in decline. A president who stole the election with slogans and conservative rhetoric (mostly gay-phobia which Karl Rove finds to
be very useful in the southern states) has shown no vision and has failed our people. It is time for some big changes.
One man should not be able to
thwart the will of the people with the stroke of a pen even in precarious times.
Welcome to the
First International Church of Christian Yoga
This church is
non-denominational, and welcomes
sincere seekers of every faith. I believe that Krishna, Christ, and the great sages of all true religions are of the same spirit. There
is only one God, and therefore only one true church. The great religions of the world are all a part of this one true church. I take
my inspiration from such world teachers as Sri Paramahansa Yogananda,
Mahatma Ghandi, Sri RamaKrishna and Sri ShivaBalaYogi. You may join the
church by joining this group or by sending me an email at church
mail.
Also
email me if you wish to make a free will offering. (Note that this church is in the process of writing a new independent charter and claims no tax exemption, which would silence our political voice.) None of my internet activities have been
sanctioned by Self-Realization Fellowship.
One day I hope to build The
Birmingham meditation center, a branch of
The First International Church of Christian Yoga, however I will need donations.
We live in precarious times,
our sacred Mother Earth is being pushed to the brink. Entire species of plants and animals are being wiped out at 50 times the natural
rate. The rainforest and coral reefs are being destroyed at an alarming rate. I am descended from mostly European stock, but now I
hear the call of my Cherokee ancestors.
Peace is elusive, Iraq is in
turmoil, the Israel-Palestinian
conflict continues to rage, with occupation of contested historical religious sites as a key barrier to compromise. And there is the
endless conflict in northern India between Muslim and Hindu, and Hindu and Sikh. And let us not forget the bloodshed in the former
Yugoslavia.
The percentage of
American adults who identify themselves as
Christians is dropping by several percentage points per decade. If these trends hold, then sometime in the near future, Christianity will
become a minority religion in the United States. North America is rapidly becoming more religiously diverse. But there may not be a
strong enough foundation of religious tolerance to support this
future diversity without massive conflict.
The First International Church of Christian
Yoga is working to avoid religious misunderstanding and conflict in
America and throughout the world, so we might avoid the kinds of conflict which have become prevalent in other lands. We live in a
world of difference. Yet, we are interdependent. Nowhere is learning to live with difference more important than religion. Too often,
religion is misused as an instrument for division and injustice, betraying the very ideals and teachings that lie at the heart of each
of the world's great traditions. We propose a church of all religions, where sincere seekers of every faith may come to worship
together. Many college campuses in America are leading the way, by providing inter-faith places of worship. Above I have placed a draft
of what I think the altar of such a church might look like. In the center are statues of God the father/mother of the universe, Krishna-Radha. At the right hand of God is Jesus, Buddha at the
left hand. Above these figures are Mother Mary, Sri Ramakrishna, Suzuki Roshi, Sitting Bull and Paramahansa Yogananda. Below the statues are
the symbols of several religious faiths- Judaism, Native American,
The First International Church of Christian Yoga (the cross with the OM sanskrit word symbol of the Holy Spirit), Primal religion (I have
used the ecology flag to include those who revere Mother Earth), and Islam. This is just my idea of an altar, we propose to ordain
ministers of every faith and to charter Churches all over the world, each having the freedom to devise their own altar as they see fit.
All we will ask is that persons of all faiths be welcome to come in and worship together. Each congregation can work out it's own details. For instance some might think I have left someone out, such as the Baha'i, or the Sikh. That is fine, add them if you wish. Some
may think my altar is too heavy on the Self-Realization side. It is
ok, just replace them with someone else you might revere, such as Mahatma Gandhi or Mother Teresa. Some might complain that they don't
believe in Buddha, that is fine, we are not trying to get everyone to believe the same thing, we are just trying to get everyone to come
together and worship together. But there is only one God and his name is Allah you might say, that is ok, his/her name is also Yahweh, Vishnu,
The Unknowable, Durga or Wakantanka.
The First
International Church
of Christian Yoga will promote interfaith activities which are based upon shared threads of understanding. Among those is the affirmation
of religious freedom, the appreciation and celebration of diversity, and the belief that through interfaith dialogue, understanding
replaces prejudice. Through interfaith action, the world can become a better place for everyone. We will attempt to provide a framework for
expressing many visions of a just, peaceful and sustainable future. In the process, religious and spiritual communities will discover a
shared commitment to ethical principles. This shared commitment will
open the way for a new era of cooperative action among the world's
religious and spiritual communities. The well-being of the Earth and
all life depends on such a collaboration.
A Former President said, "It's the
economy, stupid!" He was wrong, it's not the economy, it's the environment!
Our economy is based on a concept known as sustainable growth, and there is simply no such thing. Every day we read about stress-induced
feedbacks from the ecosystem to the economy, such as greenhouse buildup, ozone layer depletion, acid rain, etc., which constitute
evidence that even the present scale is unsustainable. How then can
people keep on talking about "sustainable growth" when the present
scale of the economy shows clear signs of unsustainability, and the
concept itself is logically self-contradictory in a finite ecosystem? What will become of humanity physically and spiritually if it doesn't
nurture the planet that nurtures it?
A study by the World
Wildlife Fund warns that the human race is plundering the planet at a pace
that outstrips its capacity to support life. It is a damning condemnation of Western society's high consumption levels. The report, based on scientific data from across the world, reveals
that more than a third of the natural world has been destroyed by humans over the past three decades. The report warns that either consumption rates must be dramatically and rapidly lowered or the planet will no
longer be able to sustain its growing population. Experts say that seas will become emptied of fish while forests - which absorb carbon
dioxide emissions - are completely destroyed and freshwater supplies become scarce and polluted. The report offers a vivid warning that
people must curb their extravagant lifestyles and cut consumption now.
So hear now this prophesy. Fifty
years from now either you reborn and/or your grandchildren will live on the kind of
world we are now creating, a garbage dump of a planet. Billions of sickly suffering people without clean air to breathe, clean water to
drink, or good food to eat. There will be no more pride for our nation or any other nation. No wild animals or wild places left. But
we will have all the gold mined, and there will be plenty of crumbling million dollar homes. Is it worth it? We could have chosen clean
energy alternatives fifty years ago, and in our
shortsightedness we chose the nuclear and coal burning route. Why? Because the energy
companies wanted to maximize profits, and you can't do that by having a solar collector and windmill at every house. So we gain the world
but lose our souls, then we lose the world also!
Note to our
political leaders:
we will only vote for politicians who are friendly to our environment, and through our webpages, which are visited by thousands
of people, we encourage others to do the same.
The
constitution of the United
States was designed as a protection against tyranny. But as it was only a framework, any number of different systems of government
might have evolved from it. At first, only a privileged class -white male landowners- were allowed to vote. What the founding fathers
failed to see was the emergence of a new kind of player, the multi-billion dollar corporations. The system of government we have ended up with
is government for hire. In their greed and through their political power which they have purchased, the corporations push our sacred
Mother Earth and her inhabitants ever closer to the brink, exterminating whole species of plants and animals along the way, leaving behind a new trail of tears from which we will not be able to
recover. If you believe in the transmigration of the soul, or reincarnation, or if you care about the quality of life of your grandchildren, then remember it is we, or they, who will have
to inhabit this Earth in the future.
Jesus said: "Know ye not that ye
are the temple of God, and that the spirit of God dwelleth within you?" This is the teaching of Christ, become aware of your own divinity, become aware that your consciousness is a part of God's consciousness. You are God's instrument in the here and now. I heard
an intolerant Baptist preacher and he quoted from the Bible, "He that preaches any other word other than the true word is accursed." Know
this, the true word and name of God is OM and the First International Church of Christian Yoga is preaching this true word. Jai Guru!
Heavenly Father, Divine Mother, Friend, Beloved God, Blessed Gurus, Saints and Sages of all
Religions, we bow to you all. May thy Love shine forever on the sanctuary of our devotion, and may we be able to awaken thy love in
all hearts. May we, through deepest devotion, and through deepest meditation, awaken to Christ/Krishna Consciousness. May we transmit
to others the Divine Consciousness of God that we feel. OM, Peace,
Amen. Many Blessings to you all.
The First International Church of
Christian Yoga is an outstanding example of the blending of East and West. For
those who are drawn by Eastern wisdom while still cherishing the blessings of Christianity, this site is a must stop! ~Jagannath Prakash
Pride goeth before destruction, and
an haughty spirit before a fall. From Proverbs A righteous man regardeth the life
of his beast: but the tender mercies of the wicked are cruel. From Proverbs
About the World Summit on
Sustainable Development in South Africa 2002. The chief complaint of environmental groups and aid groups is that, while the governments
committed themselves to a lot of fine sounding goals ("to substantially increase" the global share of renewable energy and "to
cut significantly by 2010" the rate at which rare animals and plants are becoming extinct), for the most part specific targets were avoided.
But as God hath distributed to
every man, as the Lord hath called every one, so let him walk. And so ordain I in all churches. (Corinthians 7:17) For as many as are led
by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God. (Romans 8:14) Jesus
tried to explain that we are all the children of the one God. Jesus
said there would come those who would do greater works than He. (John
14:12) Protestant preachers think I have some problem accepting that
Jesus rose from the dead, I do believe it, and I believe others have
risen and probably still more shall rise.
Now these are the teachings of
Jesus, which the Lord wants emphasized in the church. "This is my commandment, That ye
love one another, as I have loved you. (John 15:12) For I was an hungred, and ye gave me meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me drink: I
was a stranger, and ye took me in: Naked, and ye clothed me: I was sick, and ye visited me: I was in prison, and ye came unto me. Verily
I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of
these my brethren, ye have done it unto me. (Matthew 25: 35,36.40)
Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted. Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth. Blessed are they which do
hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.
Blessed are the merciful for they shall obtain mercy. Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God. Blessed are the peacemakers:
for they shall be called the children of God. (Matthew 5: 4-9) Our
Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come,
Thy will be done on earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our
daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who
trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us
from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen."
These are the teachings of
Jesus, the anointed Christ, which are too often ignored in favor of a dogmatic, dark-age
religion that stresses that you must believe each and every little thing just right or else you must burn. The truth about each question
can only truly be known through God-contact, which may be gained
through meditation. Meditation is only a technique through which the
mind is stilled, so we may sit in the presence of God. God is within,
God is consciousness-knowledge-bliss. We are each one a part of God,
and in meditation we reclaim our Divine birthright as children of the
living God. This is the message of love; that we find God within, and
God's peace, God's joy, God's love. Then we take this love, peace and
joy with us throughout the day, practicing the presence of God, which
is sometimes called "prayer without ceasing".
I am inspired to speak about the
spiritual path, and of the plight of our mother Earth. The natural and spiritual way to live is in a communal village, as Indians in both
North America and in India have traditionally lived. Now we in the
United States refer to ourselves as a Christian Nation, but I doubt
that if Jesus came down to see our slaughterhouses, our war machines
and our government for hire that he would recognize us as being very
Christian. Those in the early Christian church lived communally, and
held all possessions in common. Consequently we endorse such
practices as helping to create village societies, recycling and
composting, practicing organic gardening, solar and wind power,
vegetarianism, natural health care, midwifery, meditation and
cooperative living. We can still create a world where there are no
environmental diseases, no malnourished children, and no wars.
Diversity will flourish, rainforest will expand, new coral reefs will
be born. There will be no poverty, and no affluence either. Success
will be measured in peoples readiness to pass on what they have learned, and their ability to help others. People will practice
loving kindness, compassionate action, joy in serving others, detachment and peacefulness. Hear the call of your heart, and find some way
to serve your Sacred mother Earth, and humanity as a whole. We, as
God's children, are also God's instruments for change. Renounce greed
and ignorance, and become free in the light of God's truth.
The Washington National
Cathedral was overflowing with people of all faiths who had waited in line for
hours to hear the Dalai Lama's
teaching on peace on the second anniversary of Sept. 11. The interfaith service blended Buddhist and Christian chants, and prayers for peace were offered in English and Sanskrit. Bishop
John Chane and Tenzin Gyatso, the 14th Dalai Lama, exchanged Tibetan khata - white scarves that represent purity - as a gesture of blessing at the start of the service, and Bishop
Jane Homes Dixon read from The Beatitudes. The Dalai Lama urged those present to exercise discipline in the practice of their religion - whatever their religion was - and to make an effort to move in a positive direction, despite the negative events of Sept. 11. "I believe the promotion of compassion, forgiveness,
contentment and self-discipline - these things I believe are the most important,” he said, as around 3,000 people listened in respectful silence. He told the congregation not to be
paralyzed by the events of Sept. 11, but to use it as an opportunity for personal growth and forgiveness. “You have given us a great gift,” said Bishop Chane. “Thank you from the
center of our being and the core of our hearts.”
The Pope also met with the Dalai Lama, eight times in fact. When John Paul the Great departed this life I felt a great love, as if being free of his physical body allowed his love to over spread to all peoples- all nations. I began to find out
more about him and what he advocated. The pope advocated a human-centered capitalism. For the pontiff, a healthy free economy required not only liberty, democracy and an ethical
base but also solidarity, or a charitable concern for fellow human beings. Work and business are about doing for others, including meeting human needs in quality of life and quality of
the environment. The pope was clear on the dangers of relying on the market alone or following "radical capitalist ideology."
There were dangers to the weak, the elderly and workers whose skills are suddenly made obsolete. Pathological consumerism was
another worry.
A CIVILIZATION OF LOVE: THE POPE'S CALL TO THE WEST
Pope John Paul II recently spoke to the United Nations and emphasized responding to the needs of the poor and the immigrant, when so many have lost interest in them. He called
for rich nations to help poorer nations. His words reflect his frequently expressed concern about a world economy that oppresses workers to a point of inhuman conditions. The Pope
clearly rejected communism and played a significant role in its downfall. But he also clearly rejects materialistic capitalism and consumerism. With the fall of communism there was the hope
that the tremendous energy of the Cold War could be invested economically for the betterment of the Third World and for
peace. Unfortunately, this is not happening. While the threat of communism has receded, the threat of economic oppression has emerged as a giant to terrorize the poor. Communism forced the First World to be concerned about the needs of the poor. That force is no longer present for the promotion of human rights among working people.
We are alerted to the dangers of consumerism, it is clear that this is linked to ecological destruction and social alienation.
We are encouraged to engage in a dialogue among Catholics and other Christians about our responsibility for the economic situation in our world and for the implications of the Pope's
call to holiness for each of our daily lives and life styles. The collapse of international communism has destroyed one of the most obvious enemies of human freedom, but it has left the
starving of the Third World in their misery, even while the moral anarchy of a mass popular culture prevails in the affluent West- destroying those common things that lie at the
root of social order and organic community. In the long run, communism itself may have had less power to destroy traditional morality and historic cultures than the disintegrative
consumerism of the West. And so, when Pope John Paul II criticizes the complacency of the developed nations, and looks to them to make "important changes in established life-styles,
in order to limit the waste of environmental resources," this is no mere rhetorical fragment that somehow wandered into the
text. The universal call to holiness, made concrete in the promotion of justice and leading towards a civilization of love, demands nothing less than a change of life-styles. The
pope goes so far as to question the "models of production and consumption" that dominate present-day economic theory, and
even "the established structures of power which today govern societies." The need to respond to this call could not be more urgent. "Everyone should put his hand to the work which falls
to his share, and that at once and straightaway, lest the evil which is already so great become through delay absolutely beyond remedy"
And now a few hard thoughts about something else that has come to my attention: disharmony among the followers of Sri Yogananda. There are always going to be differences of opinion
in any great endeavor, but do we want to end up 1,000 years from now with 400 different denominations the way the protestants have? Must we let these differences bring us (yogis
and yoginis!?) to disharmony and discontent? Let us take a fresh look at the problems and see if we cannot come to some consensus.
Now there is the problem with the spelling of the monastic title- Paramahansa or Paramhansa? Also Rajarsi or Rajasi? Paramhansa is "greatest swan" and Paramahansa is "great swan".
It is said that Sri Daya Mata changed the spelling to Paramahansa in 1958 after a visit of the Shankacharya of India to SRF Headquarters. It seems that it is considered improper in
India to hold that one guru is greater than another. It must be noted that it was difficult for any organization to flourish in India without the blessing of the Shankacharya. However this
change irritated many American followers who rightly considered Sri Yogananda to be a World Teacher, and even an Avatar.
But look at what happened to the name of Yahshua, which in Latin America is pronounced Hehsus? In the USA we call him
Jesus, a name that was never heard until the invention of the printing press in the 1500s. We are told the name Jesus has power, yet his true Aramaic name has the same root as his
Father in heaven, Yahweh!
Sri Daya Mata was simply following the wishes of her guru, so she thought, for he had told her that it was important for the church to grow in India. Her reasoning was the same when she
added Krishna to the altar. It is said that Paramhansa (I accept either spelling!) never put Krishna on the altar because he believed that Babaji is the reincarnation of Krishna and
spoke of them as one personage, Babaji-Krishna! What does it really matter? I worship and meditate at either altar. I have meditated with Self-Realization Fellowship, Center for
Spiritual Awareness, Friends (Quakers), the Farm, the Shivabalayogi group and Shambala Buddhist, and I can tell you that the most important thing when meditating in a group is to
open the heart to everyone in the group and to God.
There are more points of contention but I will mention only one more for now, that Yogananda ordained householders as well as monastics as Priest (called brothers or sisters). Sri Daya Mata
changed the rule so that only monastics could become ordained. I think this was done to try to establish some organizational control in order to avoid embarrassments when human weaknesses
come to light? Perhaps the next president of SRF will institute some reforms? The important things to remember are to meditate more, be more unattached, follow your Guru or your spiritual
teacher with surrendered devotion as your heart leads you. If we followers or Sri Paramhansa Yogananda cannot love and honor
one another what does this say to the world about the teaching which we claim to follow? OM Guru, Jai Guru, OM Shanti!
And so let us establish together the true
church of Jesus Christ, of original Christianity. This is the 4th branch of Christianity. Now we have Catholic, Protestant, Eastern
Orthodox and original Christianity, which is The First International Church of Christian Yoga. You know there are different branches of
Yoga, there is the Hatha Yoga of the body, and there is Bhakti Yoga of devotion, Japa Yoga where the names of the Lord are chanted,
and there is the royal Yoga which is Raja, the Yoga of meditation. Be still and know that I am God. This means meditation. I know there are
those who think I am wrong, they think I am just another new-age universalist, and irrelevant But God is speaking to my heart, God is
not happy with the churches which create and support division, which teach
intolerance and moral superiority. These are the teachings which enabled Christians of the past to wipe out or enslave whole Indian
nations, and which now enable the extermination of whole species of animals, and which enable the destruction of the rainforest. After
all, the heathens are less than human, and animals have no souls, so we have been taught. And a word about patriotism, if we love this
country let us give more than lip service, let us protect the land and her sacred creatures. Let us bequeath something worth having to
our children's children.
Sacred Name Bible Study and commentary: Our God is both Heavenly Father and Divine Mother.
Genesis 1: 26: And ELOHIYM
said, Let Us make man in Our image, after Our likeness: and let them
have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air,
and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping
thing that creepeth upon the earth. 27: So ELOHIYM created man in His
own image, in the image of ELOHIYM created He him; male and female
created He them. Note this passage says God created man in his own
image, but it says male and female. The definition of man in this
case is the human race; mankind. So, taking this into account, mankind is created in God's image. 28: And ELOHIYM blessed them, and
ELOHIYM said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth.
The Hebrew word for God in verse 26 is Elohiym.
It is in the plural so the pronouns Us, and Our are properly supplied. In the next verse the Hebrew word for God is also Elohiym.
The pronoun His is also plural and should be translated as Their. The image of
Themselves. In this light we consider that the Holy Spirit or paraclete is feminine. The Comforter or feminine Holy Spirit proceeds from the center of the Father, as Eve came out from
Adam, and then is sent from beside the Father as the gift from this feminine Holy Spirit to those of faith.
The Words of Bhagavan Krishna from the Bhagavad Gita:
Those who engage in sacrifice by the cultivation of knowledge worship the Supreme Lord as the one without a second, as diverse in many, and in the universal form. It is I who am the
ritual, I the sacrifice, the offering to the ancestors, the healing herb, the transcendental chant. I am the butter and the fire and the offering. I am the father of this universe, the
mother, the support and the grandsire. I am the object of knowledge, the purifier and the syllable OM. I am also the Rig, the Sama and the Yajur Vedas. I am the goal, the sustainer, the
master, the witness, the abode, the refuge, and the most dear friend. I am the creation and the annihilation, the basis of everything, the resting place and the eternal seed. I give
heat, and I withhold and send forth the rain. I am immortality, and I am also death personified. Both spirit and matter are in Me.
Those who are devotees of other Gods and who worship them with faith actually worship only Me. If one offers Me with love and devotion a leaf, a flower, fruit or water, I will accept it.
Whatever you do, whatever you eat, whatever you offer or give away, and whatever austerities you perform - do that as an offering to Me. In this way you will be freed from bondage to
work and its consequences. With your mind fixed on Me in this principle of renunciation, you will be liberated and come to Me. Whoever renders service unto Me in devotion is a friend, is
in Me, and I am also a friend to him. Even if one commits the most abominable action, if he is engaged in devotional service he is to be considered saintly because he is properly situated in his determination. He quickly becomes righteous and attains lasting peace. Declare it boldly that My devotee never
perishes. Those who take shelter in Me will attain the supreme destination. Therefore, having come to this temporary,
miserable world, engage in loving service unto Me. Engage your mind always in thinking of Me, become My devotee, offer obeisances to Me and worship Me. Being completely absorbed in
Me, surely you will come to Me.
I show thee all my semblances- infinite, rich, divine- my changeful hues, my countless forms. See! In this face of mine. Then O king, the God so saying, stood to Pritha's son displaying, all the splendor, wonder, dread of his vast
almighty head. Out of countless eyes beholding, out of countless mouths commanding, countless mystic forms enfolding. In one form supremely standing, countless radiant glories
wearing, countless heavenly weapons bearing, crowned with garlands of star clusters, robed in garb of woven lusters. Breathing from his perfect presence, breaths of every subtle
essence, of all heavenly aromas. Shedding blinding brilliance, overspreading, boundless beautiful, over all spaces- with his
all regarding faces. So He showed, if there should rise suddenly within the skies, sunburst of a thousand suns, then might that Holy one's majesty and radiance be dreamed of.
