Independence High School (IHS) - "Home of the 76ers" A California Distinguished School since 1994. Independence HS was built in 1976 and is located in the East foothills of San Jose, CA. The student population exceeding 4,000+, Independence is the 12th largest high school in the United States. The student population is divided into five schools/villas (American, Bicentennial, Constitution, Democracy, Eagle) and each villas having its own principal, councelors, and office staff. IHS students have access to more facilities than most school students in the world. These include a professional 550 seat theater, an Olympic swimming and diving complex, a planetarium, a gym seating 5,000, a lighted stadium, as well as excellent industrial education shops, computer labs, and large performing and visual arts complexes. The 65 buildings on the 102 acre campus provide a relaxed and open learning atmosphere. IHS also provides students with one public library, one school library, before and after school tutorial center, school bank, student store, health clinic, bookworm, and food services.

School Yearbook - Independence High School's award-winning yearbook, The American, is known for detailed writing. Its annual budget is $65,000.
School Band- Independence has a band program that includes Wind Ensemble, Concert Band, Symphony Orchestra, Orchestra, and Symphonic Band. Independence also has Winter Percussion, WinterGuard (A and Open) programs. Independence's band, the 76th Cavalry - Marching Band and Color Guard was World Champion in 1989 and are currently competing in the WBA circuit and are in the AAA division.
Dance- Dance classes offered at Independence include: Jazz 1, Jazz 2-3, Ballet 1, Ballet 2-4, Modern 1, Modern 2-4, and Theater Dance (also known as Independance Company, audition only).
