The term "LowBrow" is used to describe a street-level style of contemporary art that lends itself to underground culture,coloration and attitude. A decidedly offbeat "no rules" mentality exists among the subject matter: Influenced by 60's psychedelic rock, hedonistic sex, hot rods & Kustom Kars, urban decay, Eastern philosophy, crime/gangster/outlaw-types, pulp art, beatnicks, surfers-skaters, greasers, gearheads,and trippy tiki culture, primarily with California contributing/influencing the greatest variety of the Low Brow movement. Artists like Von Dutch, Robt. Williams, Ed "Big Daddy Roth, Pizz, Robert Crumb, Stanley Mouse, Mark Ryden, Van Arno, Von Franko, Frank Kozik, Coop, Todd & Kathy Schorr are just several names that cover the almost 40 year West Coast "history" of what can be considered, in general terms, "Low Brow" art. It is important to note that "Low Brow" art doesn't equate with inferior artistic/technical ability or sloppy "hack art"... These artists are creating innovative and technicaly proficient works of art...it's just that the typicall stuffy and conservative art person/museum/gallery fail to view this art from the proper street-level perspective necessary to understand the complexity of what is "underground".
