They started in 1997 with lots of ideas and little money - and they're ending in 2004 pretty much the same way. But in between, the homespun television comedy troupe known as The Slack Pack proved that creativity can flourish, even in the "decadent suburban boredom" (their words) of Long Island. Consciously or not, the show recalls the great British TV comedies "The Young Ones" and "The Goodies," in which the most basic rules of television - character, continuity, believability - were gleefully broken. In one episode of "The Slack Pack," the stars died in a Scorsese-style montage accompanied by Eric Clapton's "Layla." In another, they became vampires who drained most of their neighbors. ~ Rafer Guzman, Newsday
