Inequitable trade practices are having catastrophic effects around the globe. A few privileged nations, and within those nations, a handful of powerful corporations, are destroying the lives and economic health of innumerable nations and people. These privileged nations and corporations, in many instances, are functioning almost as one entity, outside of regulation. The only rules are rules made by those who have power and stand to benefit from "Free Trade".

"Organisations" like the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund (see also: Bretton Woods Project) are directly contributing to the growing gap both in number and wealth between the rich and the poor. They are doing so and have done so by offering loans with strict conditions and extraordinary interest rates to developing nations to create a form of economic slavery. This is the worst kind of extortion and exploitation on an absolutely massive scale.

This is economic imperialism and imprisonment.

This is globalisation.

Fair trade organisations exist to educate people about unfair trade practices and work to change those practices. Unfortunately, the people who have the status to make the rules stand to gain a lot of money through free trade. Thus, the public is taught to believe that free trade is a good thing, an American (purely capitalistic) ideal.

This little myspace group is a way to say "I'm for fair trade." My hope is that your friends will see the Make Trade Fair! group on your profile and click to see what it is. Any member can invite their friends to join this group, so invite your friends! Creating Awareness is the first step towards change.

I would encourage all of you to continue educating yourselves on fair trade and the impact of globalisation. I would further encourage you to get involved. A great way to get involved is by printing off the Big Noise petition from MakeTradeFair and circulating it for your friends and family to sign. It's not so much about the petition as it is about the chance to open dialogue about fair trade and globalisation (commonly demonized terms). Again, creating awareness is the first step towards change.

Oxfam is a wonderful organisation and resource.
