**Z-TRIP BIO**
Z-Trip is one of the biggest DJ's of our time. Doing over 100 shows a year, every year. He is also known as the founding
father of the mash-up movement. His early independent releases have become highly sought after collectibles. Uneasy
Listening fetches as much as $500.00 on EBay.
No other DJ can claim playing to 500,000 people opening for the Rolling Stones at Sars-stock in Toronto, playing the
Bonaroo main stage to over 70,000 people 2 years in a row in addition to headlining a tent at Coachella twice. He's also been
busy around the world doing the Good Vibrations Festival in Australia 2006, as a headliner. All of this in addition to his US
and international headlining sold out shows, and multiple club residencies.
Z-Trips major label debut Shifting Gears was given **** (4 stars) by Rolling Stone, its highest honor. The first single Walking
Dead went Top 20 and featured Chester Bennington of Linkin Park. The album also had 2 ..1s on the college chart. Listen to
the DJ featuring Soup of Jurassic 5 and Shock and awe featuring Chuck D. He's also a master of the remix, with a stand out
re-working of The Jackson 5's "I Want You Back" on "Motown Remixed".
Z-Trip can also be seen in the movie "Scratch" and "Scratch Live" alongside Q-Bert, Mix Master Mike and originators of the
art form like Afrika Bambatta and Jazzy Jay. In addition he's appeared in "Brainfreeze" and "Product Placement", two live
concert movies, both of which feature DJ Shadow and Cut Chemist.
now a little about z-trip
He's remixed artists as diverse as Beastie Boys, Jane's Addiction, Linkin Park, Divine Styler, Butthole Surfers and Del Tha
Funky Homosapien. He's rocked both Bonnaroo and Coachella and opened for The Rolling Stones, Dave Matthews Band, DJ
Shadow, and Linkin Park. He's been covered in the pages of Vice, XLR8R and URB, was featured in the acclaimed
documentary Scratch and has been called the progenitor of the modern "mash-up." He's a veteran DJ and producer who's
traveled the globe spinning for both packed-house clubs and arena-sized crowds. He's the artist Spin called one of the ten
best turntablists in the world.
We're talking, of course, about acclaimed DJ Z-Trip. On April 19th, Hollywood Records will release his highly anticipated
major label debut, SHIFTING GEARS.
The album is as much about hip-hop as it is an embodiment of Z-Trip's personal music journey. "On one hand, it represents
the kind of sound that's in my crate when I go out and DJ the classics, the soul, the b-boy stuff, up-tempo jams, even the
dark stuff," says Z-Trip. "On the other hand, it's about me trying to expand boundaries. I get off on DJing the stuff other
people aren't, and the 'mash-up' thing is being done to death now. So I guess you could say that this record is about me
moving on."
SHIFTING GEARS features a plethora of guest-stars, including Public Enemy's Chuck D ("Shock & Awe"), Soup of Jurassic
5 ("Listen To The DJ"), Chester Bennington ("Walking Dead"), and Whipper Whip ("All About The Music"), among others.
"I worked with a lot of people on this record," says the Los Angeles based DJ. "I used their voices to tell my story. I gave
them a sense of what the song was about and then let them do their thing."
Z-Trip first started DJing as a 13-year old growing up in Phoenix, Arizona. Despite its off-the-beaten-path locale, hip-hop
culture was alive and well in the desert and Z-Trip soon found himself in the midst of a burgeoning scene. Part of a small
collective of DJs, rappers and b-boys, Z-Trip and his then-partner, DJ Radar, formed the Bombshelter DJs, and began rocking
parties with a mix of rap classics, new school jams, funk and soul rarities, rock and jazz breaks.
Z-Trip self-released his first mix record with DJ P, entitled Uneasy Listening, Vol.1, in April '01. The record, which combined
80s classics, monster rock anthems and homogenous pop hits with pounding underground hip-hop beats and funk rhythms,
became a cult classic before its release and wound up being bootlegged more times then a Grateful Dead concert.
"I wanted to touch upon every possible reference that's led me to be where I am at this point in time," he says. "This is the
album I've always wanted to make."
