PIECE OF THE WEEK: "The Orchid" 2004-06, Oil and Acrylic on Canvas.
Aahhhhh, where to begin...This piece is based on just pure experimentation of technique and style which includes Mannerism, Surrealism, Modernism and 16th Century Italian. There is no official story behind the subject rather I'd like to have the viewer create their own story or analysis to it. Nonetheless, it's one of my favorite pieces since "The Funeral". The face at the center of the painting was something I did back in 2004 and didn't want to paint over it, so I painted around it! The rest I finished this past July. "The Orchid" will debut at the Double Solo Exhibition at Doubting Thomas Gallery August 11th...Come on out and see it!!!

MY FAVORITE PIECE OF THE WEEK
"La Vie" 1901 by Pablo Picasso, oil on canvas. The Cleveland Museum of Art.
This big-ass piece is also one of my favorites of all time and is the inspiration to many of my pieces including "Sublime Tristezza". La Vie was made during Pablo's Blue Period, a seriously dark time when we was extremely poor and struggling to find success in Paris.
The painting is about the cycle of life: birth, youth, love, fertility, and death. The man to the left in the white speedo is Carlos Casagemas, a best friend of Picasso. He painted this after Casagemas shot himself in the head in a cafe in front of Picasso, because he found his woman cheating on her in the cafe!!! How shitty and shady is that?!!! Nonetheless this dark and beautiful style Pablo used, has become one of the most popular periods in art history, and this piece which our museum owns, is one of the most popular and important pieces he has ever created and I'm happy to say that I've sat in front and studied this painting in the museum for years.
