This group is dedicated to the free exchange of ideas and information concerning every aspect and branch of horoscopic astrology, regardless of background, and philosophical or spiritual views. This is not a ’Sun Sign’ group, and the intent is to discuss real horoscopic astrology and not to make sweeping character generalizations based upon the position of the Sun in the tropical zodiac at a person’s birth. If you only seek ’Sun Signs’ then this is not the group for you. We intend to discuss much more than just Sun signs. If you want to find out more about the ancient art of horoscopic astrology, then this is the place.
What is horoscopic astrology?:
Horoscopic astrology is a very specific and advanced type of astrology that developed in the Mediterranean region in the 2nd and 1st centuries BCE. It can essentially be summed up as the practice of casting astrological charts that reflect the apparent positions of a variety of celestial bodies and points from the perspective of the individual at any given moment in time in order to interpret the inherent meaning underlying the alignment of the planets at that moment. The idea is that the placement of the planets at any given moment in time reflects the nature of that moment and especially anything which is born then, and this can be analyzed using a horoscopic chart and a variety of rules for interpreting the ’language’ or symbols contained therein. The most prevalent application of horoscopic astrology is to use it to analyze the birth charts of individuals in order to read character, psychological traits, and to some extent destiny.
In ancient Hellenistic astrology the rising sign demarcated the first celestial house of a chart, and the word for the ascendant was horoskopos. This is the word that our term "horoscope" derives from, and in modern times this word has come to denote the birth chart of an individual as a whole.
