NASA Sun-Earth Day 2009

SUN-EARTH DAY 2009

OUR SUN YOURS TO DISCOVER

March 20, 2009

Sun-Earth Day is comprised of a series of programs and events that occur throughout the year culminating with a celebration on or near the Spring Equinox. For Sun-Earth Day 2009, NASA will engage a worldwide audience in the celebration of the International Year of Astronomy (IYA), especially in daytime astronomy. Tremendous strides have been made as satellites and ground-based observatories attentively monitor the Sun to understand the processes that govern the Sun's influence on our solar system. Using the popular Sun-Earth Day framework NASA will offer a series of coordinated events to promote and highlight the Sun, its connection to Earth and other planets, and support the spirit of international collaboration.

Mountain Twilight

by William Renton

"Oils and Water Colours" 1893

The hills slipped over each on each

Till all their changing shadows died.

Now in the open skyward reach

The lights grow solemn side by side.

While of these hills the westermost

Rears high his majesty of coast

In shifting waste of dim-blue brine

And fading olive hyaline;

Till all the distance overflows,

The green in watchet and the blue

In purple. Now they fuse and close -

A darkling violet, fringed anew

With light that on the mountains soar,

A dusky flame on tranquil shores;

Kindling the summits as they grow

In audience to the skies that call,

Ineffable in rest and all

The pathos of the afterglow.
