The Pre-Raphaelite movement was an organized collection of English artists and poets that recaptured the beauty and brilliance of life and their subjects. Formed in 1848, they named themselves the "Pre-Raphaelites" because of Raphael and the scientific movement of the Renaissance.
Their subjects were mostly women, many from literature (i.e. Ophelia, La Belle Dame sans Merci, etc.) and were often morbid, and/or supernatural in nature.
Some artists include Millais, Waterhouse, Rosetti, Collinson, Burne-Jones, Alma-Tadema, Strudwick, Stephens, Woolner, and Cowper.
