In April of 1999, a group of 19 women gathered on the fourth floor of Desmond Hall at Loyola Marymount University. They all had different backgrounds, different majors, and different goals and interests. Some knew each other and some did not. Despite their differences they all shared a common belief: each was unhappy with the existing organizations on campus and felt a need to do something about it. The first meeting went on for about three hours until the consensus arrived that a Latina based sorority was the answer. There was already an unrecognized Latina-based sorority at LMU, but the women decided it was not the one for them. Thus, the decision was made to start a new sorority on the LMU campus.

Not knowing what was in store for them, they set off on a mission to start a new
Sorority. They did extensive research on various sororities and narrowed the choices down to three. Sigma Lambda Gamma was the first sorority scheduled to come to LMU and give a presentation. The sisters of Nu Alpha Chapter at the University of Southern California came to LMU to give the women a brief, informal presentation. Immediately after, the women knew that Sigma Lambda Gamma was the one for them. The following day they canceled the two other presentations scheduled to come, and decided to contact Sigma Lambda Gamma National Headquarters. They soon became an official interest group.

In September of 1999, the interest group of thirteen women (inducted by the sisters of the Nu Alpha Chapter) officially became a colony of Sigma Lambda Gamma National Sorority. In December of 2000, the colony was asked to petition to become the first ever recognized Latina-based sorority at Loyola Marymount University. The spot could only be given to one sorority either the colony or an already existing chapter of Lambda Theta Alpha. After a successful presentation by Sylvia Sanchez, the National VP of expansion at the time, the colony became the first recognized Latina-based sorority to exist at Loyola Marymount University.

On March 12, 2000 at 8:14:30 pm the original colony of thirteen women were initiated into the sisterhood of Sigma Lambda Gamma National Sorority by the sisters of Nu chapter and officially became the founders of the Alpha Beta Chapter at Loyola Marymount University. On March 12, 2000 at 9:21:15 pm, the next sixteen women were initiated by new ABsolutely Alpha Beta chapter founders, with help from the sisters from Nu Chapter, and officially became part of the family as the founding line. On this day, these women set the foundation for what would become the most powerful, strong-minded, intelligent, and beautiful group of women to ever walk the grounds of LMU. The upcoming years have proven and will continue to prove the hard work, dedication, power, and prestige of the ABsolutely Alpha Beta Chapter at Loyola Marymount University.
