I think what we have to realize is that Williams and Goldsmith represent, along with James Horner and James Newton Howard, a film score style that is skilled, imaginative, dedicated, but in serious danger of becoming extinct.
Today's style and practice of film scoring, for the most part, lacks a certain quality. Please watch the video clips on this group page (located above) to refresh one's mind how classic, effective, and exciting scores should sound like. Many action films today are accompanied by loud "rock-style, mindless" dribble that will be forgotten within minutes. Every ten years, the film music industry experiments with new styles. This time period is followed a decade or a "return to form." I very much look forward to the next decade of scores, hopefully by wonderful scores from Alexandre Desplat, James Newton Howard, James Horner, John Williams, Alan Silvestri, Danny Elfman, Michael Giacchino (needs to work a bit on thematic material), John Powell, Howard Shore, and Thomas Newman.
