The first system to implement video game cartridges was the Fairchild Channel F in August of 1976. Up until then game data was coded into microchips in the actual unit itself. Most video game cartridges contain a series of rom chips that hold the game data. These chips are fragile, so they incased them in plastic. Cartridges quickly became a standard for home consoles, and stayed this way until the onset of cd technology in the early 90s. Now the last two systems that are mass-produced and still use cartridges are the Nintendo Game Boy Advance, and the Nintendo DS.
