The Civil War was the first new war and the last old war. The weapons were new and improved, but the tactics remand Napoleonic and because of that the death toll became higher then any one imaging. Here in this civil war group we can discuss the campaigns, battles, engagements, actions, combats, sieges, and skirmishes that took place in the Civil War. We can also discuss the units that took part in theses engagements. Also the political side of the Civil War. South Carolina led the way out of the Union on December 20th 1860, and by March 1861 six more states left the union, outraged over Lincolns election to the presidency. Encouraged by the seven states that left the union, Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, and Texas seceded. After the bombardment of Fort Sumter and Lincoln's call for troops to put down the rebellion in April, Virginia, Arkansas, Tennessee, and North Carolina followed suit. War soon broke out, and four long bloody years will past until it was over.
In the course of the war 2.6 million served in the Federal ranks 364,511 of them died ether by disease or were killed, and 281,881 were wounded. In the Confederate Army 1.2 million served in the ranks 260,000 of them died ether by disease or were killed, and 194,000 were wounded. 3.3 million Americans served in 2,047 units (unfortunately few have complete regimental histories) that participated in 10,000 engagements in 119 campaigns. When the smoked cleared both sides suffered 624,511 dead.
