In the summer of 1999, Dross and Scathe met while enrolled at a recording engineering school
called Los Angeles Recording Workshop. Shortly after meeting, the two decided
to get together and casually jam together and bounce different musical ideas off
of each other. In March of 2000, they placed their first ads to begin forming what
was to ultimately become Sothis. In December of 2000, they found their first member; a bassist named Zereth. One month later they attained a keyboardist named Asperia. The members began writing material and continuing to search for a vocalist and second guitar player. In May of 2001, a second guitarist joined the band but, due to time constraints on his
part, the relationship was short lived. The foursome continued to battle on by auditioning many musicians but, unfortunately, none of them ultimately panned out.
In October of 2001, Zereth departed to pursue his own musical endeavors and
Scathe, Dross, and Asperia continued on. After two years of persistent attempts
to find new members, they decided that without the right vocalist, it simply
wasn’t worth continuing on. The trio placed a modest, quarter page ad in Pit
Magazine issue ..40 in search of a vocalist. In July of 2002, prior to the Pit
Magazine ad being released, Dross answered an ad posted by Drogoth, the
vocalist of San Diego based Symphonic Black Metal band “Nocturnal Demise”.
By September of that same year, Drogoth had disbanded Nocturnal Demise in order to join both the band and its battle to make Sothis a complete unit.
In February 2003, the Sothis crew decided to place a 30 second commercial on the now defunct " L.A. Metal" T.V. program which aired on a local cable television network. While it might have been a noble attempt at finding Bassist and second Guitarist, the effort proved ultimately
fruitless. The four even tried other alternative tactics in order to complete the
lineup, including a two hundred dollar reward to anyone that referred someone
to them that would ultimately become a permanent member. While pursuing a
lead on a possible Bass player who was talking about re-locating to Los Angeles from the Chicago area, Drogoth was introduced to Guitarist
Nylock. By April of 2003, Nylock had joined Sothis and the
battle was on to find a Bassist. The five members of Sothis decided to go on an all out campaign to find a Bass player and complete the line up. The onslaught consisted of constant classified ads, flyering gigs, and the placement of several ads in local magazines. With very little response to
these efforts, the band realized that it was time to begin recording their
first demo CD, even though the lineup wasn't quite complete. In March of
2004, the band began recording their first official release, with Scathe
handling bass playing duties. Before the recording was finished, Sothis finally found the bassist they needed to complete the lineup. In the end, it wasn't until December of 2004 that the Bass player would finally be found.
Ironically, Zereth returned to the fold, some four years after he had first joined. The task of completing the recording was an arduous one, with many obstacles slowing down the process. During the time that Sothis was continuing the recording of their demo, they released several full-page color ads in
"Keeper Magazine" to keep the L.A. metal scene aware of their presence, and their upcoming release.
