DUANE ALLMAN

This group is dedicated to the legacy of guitar player Duane Allman, a founding member of the Allman Brothers Band and extraordinary rock & roll slide guitar player.

This is a place for fans to talk about Duane Allman's music, playing and legacy, slide guitar, classic rock, and anything else that fellow fans will enjoy hearing about.

I welcome fellow guitar players to share information about Duane's recordings, guitars, equipment, and playing style.

Background information on Duane:

Duane Allman was born on November 20, 1946 in Nashville, TN and died on October 29, 1971 in Macon, GA in a motorcycle accident.

Duane Allman was a founding member and guitar player for the Allman Brothers Band. Duane’s legacy with the band can be found on their first two studio albums, The Allman Brothers Band (1969) and Idlewild South (1970), and a live album “Live at the Fillmore East” (1971). Following Duane’s death, the Allman Brothers Band completed “Eat a Peach” (1972) with Dickey Betts playing all the guitar parts for the studio tracks. The album includes live tracks featuring Duane drawn from the run of shows used for “Live at the Fillmore East”.

The Allman Brothers Band featured two lead guitar players, Duane and Dickey Betts. Duane played slide guitar for the band. Live, Duane played with a more aggressive and fiery style than Dickey.

During his two years with the Allman Brothers Band, Duane also played alongside Eric Clapton on Derek and the Dominos' "Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs".

Prior to the Allman Brothers Band, Duane worked as a session guitarist at the legendary Alabama music studio, Muscle Shoals. He played on tracks for Wilson Pickett, Aretha Franklin and a host of other Atlantic Records R&B artists.

Recommended recordings:

The Allman Brothers Band -- Live at the Fillmore East
The Allman Brothers Band -- Eat a Peach
Two classic albums featuring the Allman Brothers Band live in 1971. Many folks consider "Live at the Fillmore East" to be the best live rock album.

The Allman Brothers Band -- Live at the Atlanta International Pop Festival: July 3 & 5, 1970 (2CDs, Epic/Legacy)
This features two excellent sets by the band. Johnny Winter joins the band on "Mountain Jam."

The Allman Brothers Band -- American University 12/13/70 (The Allman Brothers Band Recording Co)
Very fierce, terrific playing recorded just three months before the shows used for "Live at the Fillmore East".

Derek and the Dominos – Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs (Polydor)
Eric Clapton takes the spotlight all over this album, but listen to the second guitar playing alongside. These two had a lot of chemistry together that IMHO has not been matched since by another band with dual lead guitars.

Duane Allman -- An Anthology (2CDs, Polydor)
Released posthumously, this collection gathers Duane's better known tracks as a session musician before the Allman Brothers Band took off, plus some Derek and the Dominos tracks. The most notable session track is Aretha Franklin's version of "The Weight" (by the Band), which features Duane on slide guitar.
