Towering at a height of 6 foot 6, it's hard not to notice Charles Kelley. It's also hard not to notice his southern drawl. That's why so many are taken aback once they hear the rich, soulful voice that comes out of this 24-year-old from Augusta, Georgia. With production help from his brother (Hollywood Records recording artist Josh Kelley), Charles has quickly developed quite a buzz for himself over the past few months. Alongside writers Jason "Slim" Gambill, Dave Yaden, Josh Kelley, and David Haywood, Charles has amassed quite an impressive body of work in a very short period of time. In fact, his debut independent album "2 the 9's" is already set to drop in February of 2006. If things keep moving as rapidly as they have been for this bright young artist, it could be a very big year for Charles Kelley.
Kelley's interest in music began at an early age. After noticing a makeshift set of drums that Charles had created from tin buckets, his mother decided it was time to purchase the real thing, and in the meantime, a guitar for his brother Josh. At age 14, Charles, Josh, and two friends formed a band called "Inside Blue." They even released an album shortly afterward in which Charles played drums and sang lead vocals. Throughout the next few years, Charles and Josh played with several different bands but never quite found the fit they were looking for. Once his brother left for college, Charles decided to put his focus toward his studies and eventually graduated from the University of Georgia with a finance degree.
"It's funny how life finds a way to bring you back to the things your were born to do," comments Charles, recalling how just last year he was fresh out of college and working a finance job from seven to five. "I always knew someday that music would creep its way back into my life, I just didn't know how long it would take me to realize it." It took a few magical days of song writing with his brother Josh and guitarist Jason Gambill to realize that there was something inside of him that had been kept quiet for way too long.
"I've never had so much fun in my life," says Charles. "While Josh would be putting the finishing touches on production of an earlier recorded song, Jason and I would come out from the next room and present a new song idea to Josh and he would just laugh. We could all feel that there was something special brewing."
In the meantime, Charles maintains his focus on writing songs and putting together a tour to be scheduled in the near future. "I know this is not going to be an easy road," explains Kelley, "but I hope that as long as I can keep writing great songs, that eventually, good things will come my way."
