The name Mastiff derives from the Anglo-Saxon word "masty" meaning stout or powerful. It was first recorded in a Court role in l251.

French Mastiff
This former fighting dog is an excellent guard dog that vigilantly protects the home with courage, though not aggression. The French Mastiff does not like to socialize with other dogs. This gentle, calm, sensitive dog forms a strong bond with his owner and is very affectionate with children. He rarely barks. This breed detests solitude and lack of activity. This dog must be exceptionally well-trained in order to keep him under control. Dog: 60 to 68 cm. (23.5-27 in).Bitch: 58 to 66 cm. (23-26 in). Dog: at least 50 kg. (110 lb).Bitch: at least 45 kg. (99 lb). (Furry Critters.com)
Neapolitan Mastiff
The Neapolitan Mastiff displays a graphic illustration of one of the most impressive and remarkable breeds that is in existence today. He is a large breed which can weigh over 150 pounds. A comparison to man or other creatures of a similar weight and one would see a body structure exemplifying extreme strength. A type that can perform its function better than any other creature or man made machine. His body mass is volumous but not that of just fat. His muscular development would cause a game or herding dog to fail at its chores but for the Neapolitan Mastiff this is a trade off he assumed when he chose to be a guardian. (United States Neapolitan Mastiff Club)
Old English Mastiff
Large, massive, powerful, symmetrical, well knit frame. A combination of grandeur and courage. Calm, affectionate to owners, but capable of guarding. (Old English Mastiff Club)
