Skem9.com!

All bird lovers are welcome here! Doesn't matter what kind of bird you have, or what kind of bird has you! Here you will be able to find information on a most precious genus of parrot, the poicephalus! Species included are the senegal, meyers, jardines, red bellied, brown head, cape, ruppells, niam niam, yellow faced and the un cape parrot. Though not all are seen in aviaculture, such as niam-niam parrots, and the yellow faced, I will try and add as much information as I can find. If you are interested in a parrot, find out if these birds are right for you! (My page is still in the making, so don't judge its lack of content just yet. Oh yes, I will fill it up!)

Quite possibly the best picture I have taken, with a disposable camera of course. Neo was only a few months old in this photo.

This is Neo Meyer, the page mascot! He is a meyer's parrot, or p. meyeri. They are native to a large strech of central Africa, including Namibia, Angola, Zambia, Zinbabwe, Botswana, Congo, Tanzania, Chad, Sudan and Ethiopia. Thier habitat includes moist woodland and the edges of savannah. Thier status is CITES II-ENDANGERED. Neo is my first hanfed parrot. My experience so far has been a learning one. Neo is still a baby, and he has gone through many stages. Right now, he is in nippy stage. If he is playing and gets excites, he will nip. If I am doing something else while spending time with him, such as a phone call, he will strike out at the phone. He thinks he is so tough. He is not really a loud bird, but can surely tell you when he wants your attention, or a bite of what you have. He has his cuddly moments, politely telling me by moving his head where he would like a good pet. He mimicks all kinds of sounds, the most recent have been laughing, and he says "peekaboo"!

This is maybe one of the happiest videos I have seen, a baby Meyer's hatching from the egg! So tiny...

The most common would be the Senegal, or p. senegalus. Found in Senegal, Gambia and Guinea. They live in savannah woodland and open forest. Thier status is CITES II- ENDANGERED. The Senegal is known as a compact, playful, cuddly fellow. They are more "quiet" than most other parrots, (no parrot is truely quiet, it's thier nature!), and can actually talk quite well.

This is a Jardine's parrot, or p. gulielmi. They are native to a long strech of central Africa. They live in lowland rainforest and jungle habitat. Thier status is CITES II-ENDANGERED. Sometimes referre to as the "African Amazon", they are a larger member of the poi family. Though they posses a rather large beak, they are very gentle. They enjoy a good pet, and often play on thier back. They also are a good chioce for someone who wants a quieter parrot, and are capable of an extensive vocabulary.

This Jardine proves that you don't have to spend a ton of money on toys. To a parrot, just about anything can be the best toy ever! Just remember to use common sense when using household items as a plaything.

This is the Red Bellied parrot, or p. rufiventris. They are native to hot, dry savannah country of Eastern Africa. Thier status is CITES II-ENDANGERED. This is one parrot species that is sexually dimorphic. Adult males have a orange-red chest, with a female having only a hint of color. (One does want a hint of color...) These birds amuse themselves by hanging upsidedown from anything they can hold onto. Both females and males can become good talkers.

This Red Bellied parrot is doing his mating dance, listen and you can hear his little cluckie noises. Neo does this to me sometimes.

Brown-headed parrot, or p. cryptoxanthus. Thier range includes Mozambique, Tanzania and Kenya. Thier habitat is in moist woodland. Their status is CITES II-ENDANGERED. They may seem to be the least colorful of the poi family, but they are just as charming as the rest, maybe more! They love to be with thier person: cuddling, being pet, preening thier person. They love to chew and play with all kinds of toys. Like other poi, they can learn to talk.

This is the Cape parrot, or p. robustus. They are found in Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Zambia and Tanzania. Thier status is CITES II-ENDANGERED. Thier total population is less than 500 animals. These "gentle-giants" are very affectionate, using the large beak only to break nuts, not skin. They require a larger cage, as they reach a size of 13-14". They are extremely intelligent, and can learn to talk quite well.

Un-cape parrot, or p. fuscicollis. The Un-Cape parrot is a subspecies of Cape parrot, however the Un-Cape has been reclassified as Grey-headed parrot. They are fron Southwestern Africa, and highly endangered as the Cape parrot. Thier status is also CITES II-ENDANGERED. Some consider these birds a flirt, as they love human contact. As all poicephalus, they are relatively quiet, but can get loud if there is activity and they don't feel included. Another "gentle giant" of the poi family.

Ruppell's parrot, or p. rueppelli. They are native to Namibia and Angola. Thier habitat is open savannah and dry woodland. Thier status is CITES II-ENDANGERED. I have been unable to find any information about these parrots being kept in captitvity, despite finding many breeders pages. They should only be kept by breeders as pairs to help the species flourish in the future.

THE FOLLOWING SPECIES OF POICEPHALUS ARE SELDOM SEEN IN THE PET TRADE, IF AT ALL.

..scamp1981/yellowfaced.gif" align="left"The Yellow-faced parrot, or p. flavifrons. They are found exclusively in Ethiopia. Thier habitat is Mountain forest. Any individuals outside of the wild should not be kept as pets, but in a captive breeding facility. Thier status is CITES II-ENDANGERED.

The Niam-niam parrot, or p. crassus. Native to the Central African Republic, Chad, Sudan and Zaire. Thier habitat is moist woodland. They are not known to be in captivity. Thier status is CITES II-ENDANGERED.

So, now you have met them. They are similar in some ways, and in others very different! Please note, though the family as a whole is said to be "quieter" than others, they are capable of making very loud calls. They also tend to make high pitched calls, which some people may not appreciate.
