Frequently Asked Questions
Here is a list of questions I'm often asked and my answers for them.
How does the win/loss record work on Nintendo WiFi?
Every match consists of one race on four tracks. If you win overall in points, then it will give you one win for every person you defeat, and one loss for every person you lose to. So if you're in a 4 player game, and you place 2nd overall, then you would get 2 wins and 1 loss.
Somebody disconnected on me! Will it count as a loss for them?
Maybe. In my experience, if it's a one-on-one game then it will not count as a loss for them, and likewise you will not get the win. However, if someone drops from a 3 or 4 player game, and the rest of the players finish, then that player will receive the loss and everyone will receive the correct number of wins.
Is there any way to cheat?
Gah, I hope not. That's the reason I stopped playing Halo 2 online. The only way I can think of cheating is for good racers to purposely lag the game somehow, thereby making it hard to aim items. If they could do this, the game would become more about racing and less about luck with items, although this shouldn't effect how well red or blue shells work.
I was in a close finish and I crossed the finish line first, but then it gave my opponent the win! Why?
Lag. On his screen he was probably the one who crossed the finish line first, and the game just has to decide who won it. This is also why sometimes you might hit an item box but your opponent who was right behind you got the item.
Is there any way to block a blue shell?
Mushroomboy told me that he was able to drop a Bomb-omb behind him and the explosion stopped a blue shell from hitting him. Besides that, there is no way to stop them that has been widely discovered yet. Unless you're far ahead, the best thing to usually do is get close to other drivers so it hits them too.
Ever since I started playing Mario Kart my battery hasn't been lasting as long. Do you know why?
Using the built-in WiFi seems to drain the battery very quickly, so if you're planning on playing online be sure to have a charged battery or plug the DS into an electric socket while playing.
Who is the best driver to use?
This really all depends on you but most people seem to do well with Yoshi, Luigi, and the final unlockable character.
Does it do anything if I put Mario Kart: Super Circuit into my Nintendo DS while playing?
I tried this myself and it doesn't seem to do anything. Maybe we'll find out something in the future.

Alright. Here is some general advice you should use in every level:
To make things clearer, anytime I mean MT, there will be blue.
When I say MT, I mean miniturbo, as in the boost you get from red sparks on drift turns.
Always hug (stay as close to the turn as possible) curves.
Snake!!!
If you don't know what this is, go here.
Use mushrooms strategically. What I mean by this is use them in places where you get the full effect.
For example:
Using them in a long straightaway with no boost plates is GOOD.
Using them in turns, places where you could get a free boost from a dash panel, in midair, or into an obstacle is BAD.
End example
Use more than one MT per turn if you can. To do this, after releasing the R button and getting the MT, immediately hop and get the red sparks again (while still MT-ing), and release the R button again. Repeat this as many times as you can.
Whenever you go over any type of ramp, hop right before you get launched into the air. Normally, you go faster in midair than on the ground, and by hopping you stay in the air longer. (The only exception is on Wario Stadium, on the two ramps with the rings of fire. DO NOT HOP! You will hit the rings and burn out, killing your time.
Mushroom can be used off road...to cut corners...so do it!
On some levels...sharp U-turns...you can MT through the grass to save a little time...or use a mushroom...
Staff ghosts should be imitated...since they use many shortcuts...or strategic methods of racing.
If you ever hit a wall and need to turn around fast...press A and B at the same time and press a direction...It let's you turn without moving...
(Remember...I use a light car...Egg 1...so sometimes...what works for me won't work for you).
Mushroom Cup:
Figure-8 Circuit: Not much here...just mushroom through grass on turns...it saves a little time.
Yoshi Falls: Go through the short waterfalls...I think they're the first and third ones...while Mt-ing. Don't go through the long one...it will kill you.
Cheep Cheep Beach: You can go through the shallow water...hard to explain..but on the s-shaped part (copy staff ghost on the first lap) when the water is at it's shallowest...you can snake through it...and when it isn't shallow...shrooms.
Luigi's Mansion: No real shortcut...copy the staff ghost...right when you exit the mansion...turn left and cut through the offroad with shroom. Also...in the part with mud...go through the first grassy part...then...on keep going straight...there is a thin part on the rightkeep as far to the left of it as possible...drift turn right...on the next grassy part...then to the left on the next part...to the finish line...try copying the staff ghost.
Flower Cup:
Desert Hills: Some more here...after the first curve...you can shroom past the left of the pyramid in the offroad...you can always cut curves on this level with shrooms...but don't go on the dark brown...you die...right before the finish line...there is a snakey part...on the second to last curve...mushroom over it...do a hop on the top of the hill...go over the last curve..hop on the top. So..basically...copy the staff ghost.
Delfino Square: Most people don't know this...but on the part where the road splits...going straight is faster...here's what I do: I do a hop and start drifting to the left but HOLDING RIGHT so i stay going striaght...then I MT to the left...and then do another MT into the end of the curve...and beginning of the brick bridge...(STAFF GHOST TOO). Now...right before the stone bridge...you turn left...and use a shroom...see the boardwalk? Land on it. Do a mushroom...and hop on the ramp...try to land on the boardwalk...honestly...I don't recommend this...since the other shortcut is even better. The second shortcut is obvious. When you see the fruit stands and two boxes...turn right while drift turning...and MT into the dirt path. It's still faster then going around...unless you use a fat car. finally...after the huge bridge with boosts...you can mushroom through the grass on the turn...
Waluigi Pinball: Nothing much here...at all...actually
Shroom Ridge: Noghitn here really...except after the long straightaway you can cut through the grass and flowerbeds...right before the tunnel with a shroom (staff ghost)
Star Cup:
DK Pass: At the first U turn...after the little red fence...you can shroom through the snow...just avoid the trees...then after the end of the u turn...there is a second u-turn. If you go up this one...there is a secret item box up there. It gives you all good items... no matter what place you are in. At the final turn...go as close to the fence as you can...avoid the snowmen.
Tick-Tock Clock: If the hands of the big clock are out of the way...go as close to the center as you can...going straight is faster than going around. On the cogs that are turning sideways...go with the cogs...not against them. Hop off each one...it's faster. Right before the finish line...the two cogs...go on the one going the same direction as you...and hop a little after the top of the cog...or at the top. It makes you go forward more...and faster
Mario Circuit: If you hit the Goombas with green shells...they throw mushrooms out...get those...and it's like using a real mushroom. On the part with the Pirahna Plants...instead of taking the turn left and right...go offroad to the right of the rightmost pirahna plant and snake...or shroom.
Airship Fortress: Nothing to say here...although in Grand Prix...the boxes in the inside of the ship sometimes give mushrooms if you crash into them.
Special Cup:
Wario Stadium: On the second and third turns (snakey ones)...try to take them without turning...just go straight right through..then start drift turning to the left. At the first jump...hit the R button...so you go higher...and hold left...for a second...then...as you land drift turn...HUG CORNERS...on the part with the "islands" in the mud...do a hop after each boost...it helps...now...the fire rings...DO NOT HOP...you'll burnout...literally...on the snakey part with the twisting fire Y's...copy the staff ghost...So what you do is go offroad to the left of the first turn...and mushroom...then at the top of the hill...do a hop...making you jump over the second curve as well...then...if on the double hill with the three boost plates...take the two on the right...and if for some reason you always bounce over the top one...try hopping (or not hopping) from the first one...it should fix it. The trickiest part however...is at the end...where there are the short rapid bumps. What I do here...is start drift turning to the left before the bumps...get the red sparks...hold the drift...then as soon as I get off the bumps...release R...and use the boost to do the U-turn without losing speed...and...of course...hop at the top of the ramp.
Peach Gardens: Now...on this level I have some uncertainty...On the first circular section...with the flowerbed...you MT through it...or shroom...either way is faster than going around it...but if you're MTing...make sure to release R BEFORE you enter the bed...because you will lose your red sparks as soon as you enter the flowers. Avoid the arrow...it can screw you over. Next...you are in a section with two rectangular flower beds...and a steel gate...what you do here...as soon as you enter the section turn right...there is a little path between the flower bed closest to you and the wall...go through there. Now you are in a section with many square bushes...and chomps...go through the opening in the left...MT straight...go through the middle gap...then the gap on the right...then the middle...then the left again...try to MT as much as possible. After that..there is another rectangular section with two flowerbeds...go the obvious way...straight then left...but cut a little corner through the flowerbed to your right...if you want to...won't make that much of a difference. Next...there are 3 bushes in a peace sign...go either way...but then go back to the middle...Now there is the section with moles...if you have a shroom....you can cut through the grass...just go straight from the peace sign...no turning...and shroom...then turn right...to get back to start...
Bowser's Castle: One famous short cut is in the room with the spinning floor...instead of going the obvious way...continue going as far to the right as possible...there is a good shortcut there...the spinning bridge is a good place for a shroom...but don't fall off..it will kill you. When exiting the bridge...go as low as possible...but without falling...so that there will be less of a bump when you land on the solid ground. On the moving floor part...hop off each edge...it is slightly faster.
Rainbow Road: This is a tricky one...so..start...and go off the first two boost panels...right before the third one...start drift turning to the left...get red sparks...after the boost wears off...release R and IMMEDIATELY drift turn to the left again...get red sparks...go on the first two boost panels...and instead of going to the right edge...release R and IMMEDIATELY drift to the left again...go off the final boost panel...and when the boost wears off release R to MT. DO NOT HIT THE WALL...BE CAREFUL...THE GROUND IS TILTED (THERE IS ANOTHER SHORT CUT HERE...IT IS VERY DIFFICULT...AND I'M NOT SURE IF THE COMPUTER RECOGNIZES IT...I NEED VERIFICATION...ON THE PART WITH THE SMALL BOOST PANELS...IF YOU DO THIS JUST RIGHT...YOU CAN TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE SLANTED GROUND AND USE IT AS A RAMP TO FLY ONTO THE ROAD ABOVE YOU...THE LAND RIGHT BEFORE THE LOOP)...now you are on the loop-the-loop. Turn as little as possible..as it slows you down a lot...I usually shroom right after the loop...on the straight part...(THERE IS SUPPOSEDLY ANOTHER SHORTCUT...WHERE YOU DRIFT TURN INTO THE WALL TO PURPOSELY FALL DOWN LOWER ON THE LOOP...BUT I HAVE BEEN UNABLE TO DO THIS SUCCESSFULLY...HELP WOULD BE APPRECIATED) On the corkscrew...enter it on the left...so you start boosting earlier...and slowly move to the right...before the end start drifting to the left...this will not use a hop for some reason...then finish.
Shell Cup:
SNES Mario Circuit 1: This is a simple level...as you start hold left...be aware that you can go on the red and white stripey part...it is part of the road...so you will not slow down...always try to go on the red and white parts...now...this is one of the most obvious short cuts in the game...but..as you enter the part that curves inwards...just shroom through the sand to the end of the curve...if this doesn't make sense...try the staff ghost.
N64 Moo Moo Farm: Not much to say...hug curves..avoid moles...and on one part where there is a dent in the middle of the road...where item boxes are...you save a little time going to the right of that...so you don't have to go down and up...but straight through.
GBA Peach Circuit: I love this level...LIGHT CARS ONLY!!! So...first of all...immediately there is a sharp U-turn. If you are in a light car...start drifting so that you MT through the grass and vegore the trees. Don't worry about the dark green...just MT through it...DON'T HIT THE TREES...IT WILL KILL YOU. Try to go straight through the curvy part...less you turn...faster you go...turn left...don't try to cut here...then...there is another sharp U-turn...cut through the grass here...MT...or a shroom is even better...this is where I would use the shroom...AVOID TREES!!! Then finish...stay on the road...until the new lap.
GCN Luigi Circuit: Snaking is mandatory here....do multiple MT's and drifst on the turns...avoid the boost panels...hug corners...AVOID CHAIN CHOMP...that's about all.
Banana Cup:
SNES Donut Plains 1: LIGHT CARS ONLY!!! This is full of shortcuts...Now...this is tricky...and if you have a heavy car...you can't really do any of this...so...right after exiting the bridge...drift turn into the grass...snake...and then...make sure you MT out of the grass...back onto the road...(staff ghost is a perfect example..copy him...except do more MT's)...for you heavy people...don't despair too much...there is an alternative...follow the road after the bridge...and instead of turning right (ONROAD STILL)...go straight and mushroom throught the hole in the wall(near the first turn with the pipes). Next...back to light cars. On the U-turns...there are brown parts of the floor that look diseased...just go through them while MT-ing...you'll be fine...but stay off the grass...
N64 Frappe Snowland: Light cars can cut corners a little through the snow...but I usually don't. Be careful...if you enter the darker blue snow (depicted on bottom screen only) you die. When jumping over the river...add a little hop for extra height...go in a straight line through the snowmen...then...here's where a good shortcut is...drift and MT to the left...instead of doing the S shaped turn...shroom over the white snow...and hop at the top...then...on the other turn...using your speed...go over the snow again and hop again...so instead of going in an S...you go in a straight line.
GBA Bowser Castle 2: Not much here...always use the dash panels...even if you think they're in a dumb place...on the first section with many holes and ramps...stay to the left...so you hit the least amount of ramps...good place to use shroom...is about a second before the last rainbow ramp on the left. You will fly further faster. On the mesh floor part...with the firevalls and many jumps...hit the boost plates on the left and right...and avoid jumping as much as possible. It slows you down...a lot. I suggest hitting the yellow and red boost plate on the right and immediately going into the center...
GCN Baby Park: Absolutely nothing here...release R before the actual turn...so you turn while boosting...it works better than drifting...hug the wall.
Leaf Cup:
SNES Koopa Beach 2: Hug the greens...but don't actually go on them. On the part with the deep water...what I do is this: See the relatively big dark water on the right and a small puddle to the left of it? Go between them...then go straight..until you pass two more puddles...one small on left one big on right...and turn left...now...instead of going around greens...mushroom through them here...COPY STAFF GHOST!!! He does exactly what I do...so if you don't understand...copy him.
N64 Choco Island: Nothing here. Hug curves.
GBA Luigi Circuit: Personally I hate this level...don't forget that red and white striped edges are still road...so stay on them...especially on curves...cut corners by MTint through the grass and sand...on sharp U-turns only...So far...you have turned right...the left..done a u turn...now...on the next U-turn..after you have finished it...in the next curve mushroom through the offroad...This level is crazy...since you can MT through about every offroad next to the curves...they're almost all U-turns.
GCN Mushroom Bridge: After you exit the tunnel...go up the hill...try snaking up...it's a shortcut...and that's all....there is here...there were many more in GCN though.
Lightning Cup:
SNES Choco Island 2: I hate this level...so...you start off...imediately start snaking...and don't turn right...but go straight through the hole in the wall...light cars only...now...after the skinny road...start drifting to the right...MT so you are aiming right at the small puddle of mud. AVOID THE RAMPS...THEY ARE DEATH...now go straight in the huge puddle of mud...to the right of everything. Start drifting to the right...and MT past the Pirahna Plant...go to the right of the first ramp you com near to..then go straight between the ramps..and you should be closer to the left edge than the right...drift and MT...and start over...AVOID RAMPS...I know this was very confusing...so my advice is to COPY THE STAFF GHOST.
N64 Banshee Boardwalk: Nothing here...In the building....follow the arrows...
GBA Sky Garden: This is tough...there are so many here...go straight...then turn left...immediately you see a ramp...if you want to...use your mushroom about a second before you'd normally hit the ramp...you'll land on clouds...here you'll just have to hop with R over the gaps. I don't recommend this shortcut EVER because it's slower than the actual path...and you could use your mushroom more productively...Not long later...you see another little red and white ramp. Here...go to the left of it...then drift turn towards it and get red sparks...release R about a second before the ramp...and when you hit the ramp press R again to hop. (DON'T DO IT BEFORE...YOU'LL HOP OVER THE RAMP). Now...you should have hopped over the gap without a shroom...cool huh? Now...soon afterwards...there is a U-turn... slightly after it...if you focus to the left of the road...you should see a few clouds hovering...and if you want...you can hop over the gaps and use them as a short cut. This is a great one...and the fact that the staff ghost doesn't use it makes it even better.(THERE IS ALSO ANOTHER SHORTCUT HERE...WHERE YOU PURPOSEFULLY FALL OFF IN THE RIGHT SPOT...AND THE COMPUTER ACCIDENTALLY PUTS YOU BACK WAY AHEAD OF WHERE YOU SHOULD BE. IF ANYONE KNOWS THIS...PLEASE PM IT TO ME OR JUST POST IT HERE. THANKS
GCN Yoshi Circuit: THIS COURSE IS SHAPED LIKE A YOSHI!!!...LOL...anyway...there is a useful trick here...turn right...then left...(stay on the left side of the road)and then...instead of turning left...drift turn to the right...and MT about a second before the edge of the ramp...then hop at the top... Go as close to the right wall as possible...BUT DON'T HIT IT. Anyway...there is a ramp there...and you can jump over the water and save some time...but only with a shroom. OR NOT!!! yes...do what I told you...and you can jump over the gap without a shroom! Nothing much else...except on the sharp U-turn save some time by cutting through the grass with a MT.
So...those are the shortcuts I know...or tips and hints. If I missed something...or something is hard to understand...or something like that...tell me...I'll fix it...I guess...
