Statistics:
-United Nations Childrens Fund (UNICEF) now believes that the number of children trafficked annually is around
1.2 million.
-It is estimated that two children per minute are trafficked for sexual exploitation.
-In 2004, between 14,500 and 17,500 persons were trafficked into the United States (U.S. State Department estimate).
-Human trafficking generates between 10 and 12 billion dollars a year for organized crime (UNICEF estimate).
-The illicit profits from human trafficking is second only to the trafficking of drugs. (Europol estimate)."
Common methods of trafficking:
- physical force
- coercion (debt relief for family, job, marriage, etc.)
- physical and emotional abuse
- threats against self and family
- passport theft
