Kitty Moon
When you meet Sheri Moon Zombie, youre not only stuck by her American apple-pie good looks and girlish speaking voice, but by her instantly-likeable, open and friendly demeanor. If you didnt know better, youd never guess that the curvy blonde rose to fame by playing living dead girls in rocker Rob Zombies music videos and becoming one of the most memorable female serial killers on film in the hard-R films House of 1000 Corpses (2003) and The Devils Rejects (2005).
Before she was an official Zombie, Sheri went by the surname Moon or the nickname Kitty Moon. She was born in San Jose, CA., as Sheri Skerkis then moved with her family to the East Coast where she attended high school and was a self-described good girl until her senior year, when she started hanging out the with a fast crowd and replaced her former interests in working with money (I was the treasurer for my high school class) by making money dancing, modeling and doing choreography.
The 5'10" beauty soon caught the eye of Robert Wolfgang Zombie, former lead singer and impresario of the ghoulish-obsessed hard rock band, White Zombie. (Rob is now a successful solo artist and film director.) She keeps her personal life pretty personal, but she has said that she and Rob were introduced by a mutual friend and that on their first date, We had pizza and water, we talked, and that was it. That was almost 13 years ago, and the two have been together ever since.
Sheri became recognizable as the face (and other body parts) of Robs music videos and album art. Perhaps her most celebrated work prior to the movies was as the title character in the Living Dead Girl rock video. Directed by its lead vocalist, the mini-movie is set in the 1920s and filmed like an authentic flicker (with a modern metal M-TV warp, of course) which features the singer and his muse frolicking amongst coffins. My favorite video is actually Living Dead Girl, Sheri says. It was really fun to make that. Rob based it on a film called The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari. (However, the look of the expired enchantress is undoubtedly based upon the star of French filmmaker Jean Rollins 1982 gore opus also called Living Dead Girl.)
In 1999, Sheri graced the cover of Robs hit album American Music Made to Strip By sporting a cowboy hat, and not much else. Now firmly ensconced as Robs ..1 lady, she didnt worry too much about the inevitable and continuing attention from groupies. There are nice groupies, she says. Some are just very enthusiastic goth girls. And some, she laughs, are just whores!
In 2002 on what other day but October 31? the couple married. While some might find the date a little too coincidental, Sheri says, We decided to elope on Halloween, not because of the holiday but because it was ten days before we were supposed to have the big wedding. [It was] much to our parents dismay, but we still had a kick-ass, totally rockin reception with the families.
Six months later, Robs first feature film, House of 1000 Corpses was released. Prior to this Sheri had expressed an interest in doing cartoon voiceovers, but her husband did her one better and cast her among the leads in House. Id never even spoke on camera before! Sheri marvels. I was so nervous I felt like I had to vomit before every take.
