‘Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food.’
Hippocrates (460?-377? BCE, "Father of Medicine")
Some foods, such as extra-virgin olive oil, fruits, vegetables, legumes, whole grains and nuts help prevent disease. Meat and whole milk from grain-fed animals have a type of fat that increases cancer and heart disease risks. Naturally fed animals (such as grass-fed beef, game, and wild fish) usually have less fat and the type of fat they have is beneficial or less harmful. Regarding fat or oil products, virtually all fats and oils have been processed. Extra-virgin olive oil has been processed minimally, so it retains its vitamins and phytochemicals that are very beneficial. Sunflower oil (as you will notice in the topic on omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids) has very little omega-3 fatty acids, but other oils have more omega-3. Sardines are an oily fish, rich in omega-3 fatty acids, and if unfilleted also provide much calcium.
Health depends on nutrition, so the digestive system is crucial. The teeth are an important part of the digestive system. Good care of them can help ensure good nutrition an entire life.
