Who Is This Guy?

Matt Smith is an accomplished juggler. He has paintings hanging in museums all over the world. He bats right and throws right. He has appeared in such films as Sleepless in Seattle and Scent of a Woman. He writes code, he writes games, he writes songs, he writes novels, nonfiction, poetry, he writes copy, he writes laws. He fixes your plumbing and your heart and your teeth, he maybe hasn’t walked on the moon yet, but it’s only a matter of time.

My name is Matt Smith. Odds are, so is yours.

What's in a Name?

The idea is simple. Your name is Matt Smith. My name is Matt Smith. There are thousands of other people out there named Matt Smith. I want to get as many of them connected as possible. I want to know who you are, where you’re from, what you do. I want you to tell your friends, so they can tell your friends. I want you to look up that kid from 2nd grade who was the first other Matt Smith you’d ever met and the reason why you had to go by your middle name for a whole school year. Tell him to tell all his friends, too.

Let us be the new Everyman. Let’s make Matt Smith the new Anonymous. We’re already everywhere: let’s make sure people know it. In a time when individuality is prized over all else, let’s remind each other of how many of us there are. There’s something to be said for simply being a sum of parts when there are this many parts involved: our sum is, after all, pretty great.

Why Is He Doing This?

Well, why not? What else is the Internet for?

It’s funny and quirky and strange, yes. It’s supposed to be a joke but at the same time, the impact is going to be intense. Pretty soon you’ll be hearing Matt Smith jokes on the Letterman: I bet they have a Matt Smith on the writing staff. This time next year, you won’t be able to introduce yourself to someone without them seeing legions of Matt Smiths stretching out behind you. This is an idea that is going to grow and change with each new name added to the list. Right now it is only as big as I can make it. Come pitch in.

Eventually we’ll be able to do all sorts of interesting things with this. For now, it’s just kind of cool.
