This group is for anyone interested in KiteSurfing, especially those of us who have gone to Cabarete & experienced the magical atmosphere there. You can participate in group topics & ask questions, especially those of you who need advice on getting there or just anything about the Dominican culture. If you haven’t had the opportunity to go yet, make sure you do & you won’t regret it!
I'm a native New Yorker, nevertheless I'm a SUPER fan of kitesurf. The small laid back town of Cabarete is GORGEOUS!! It's in the pearl of the Caribbean...in the Dominican Republic. The village is located only 20 minutes away from the Puerto Plata's International Airport, on the northern shore of the Dominican Republic. It's a PERFECT tropical vacation spot, especially for young travelers seeking fun, new friends and sporting adventures. With its charming, hip ambiance and a combination of relaxed and adventurous lifestyles, most visitors can barely resist the temptation of extending their stay and just hang around the place for another while...I certainly have done so!
The village of Cabarete is spread out across the center of a wonderful, semi-circular beach of golden, sun-soaked, sand. Just behind, limiting its size lies a tranquil lagoon, backed up by richly verdant hills overflowing with beautiful & luxurious tropical vegetation. The flawless blend of the encircling physical elements of nature such as the location of the offshore reef at the entrance of the bay, the direction from which the trade winds usually blow, and the low-lying hills behind the village, which cause a unique thermal repercussion, form a beautiful layout. They create an unusual synthesis of outstanding wind and wave conditions. These make Cabarete's bay an phenomenal location not only for water-sports such as kiteboarding and windsurfing, but for regular surfing at El Encuentro beach as well.
Cabarete's nightlife (restaurants, bars and clubs) is fabulous & seem unreal. If you are not having fun in Cabarete, you're mad because it's a happening town... the nightlife is just amazing! The action doesn't stop when the sun sets. Restaurants and bars lining the beach beckon you with candlelit tables, culinary treats, and views of the ocean Bay and star filled sky. The nightlife heats up when friendly people from all over the world, gather to share refreshing cocktails and dance to world beats like reggae & merengue, salsa & reggaetón being the country's specialties. Trust me, if you haven't danced nor listened to reggaetón, you will leave the place loving it!!! You also have people making bonfires on the sand...making it a super romantic place as well. It's truly one of the best places to go to if you want to kite & have fun. The best time to go is during the winter months (November-April). It's packed with people from all over the world, but it's great because you can make more kite friends!
Cabarete has hosted many kiteboarding events; one of them being the PKRA (Professional Kiteboard Riders Association) 2006 World Tour. Many of the best kitesurfers from around the world came to this event & participated in it. It was SPECTACULAR!! You can take a look at the pics I have on this site.
The latest event has been the Master of the Ocean...Windsurf, Surfing, Kitesurfing Triathlon of Riding Waves, Cabarete. Master of the Ocean was created in order to select the world's best overall water sport athlete. The competitors had to compete in surfing , windsurfing in waves as well as kiteboarding in waves. Qualifiers took place from the 23rd to the 28th of February 2007 at Cabarete's Playa Encuentro and Bozo Beach.
