Kyle Rayner/Ion
Before he acquired a Green Lantern power ring, Kyle Rayner was a struggling-but-gifted freelance graphic artist. He lived and worked in Los Angeles initially. After Hal Jordan, grief-stricken over the destruction of his home town of Coast City, went on a mad rampage, killing or depowering the members of the Green Lantern Corps, including most of the Guardians of the Universe, who oversee the Corps, Rayner was found by Ganthet, the last surviving Guardian, and given the last GL power ring, the powerful weapon wielded by each Green Lantern that allows them to conjure any form of matter or energy solely with their willpower. Ganthet's reasons for choosing Kyle to bear the ring have never been made completely apparent, aside from Rayner having been in the right place at the right time. Rayner then moved to New York City.
His girlfriend, Alexandra DeWitt, helped Kyle train for his new role as a superhero, but was later murdered by the supervillain Major Force.[2] Kyle later developed relationships with Donna Troy, and later Jade, the daughter of Alan Scott.
Kyle grew up enamored with Superman and Batman, though had only a passing knowledge of Earth's various Green Lanterns. This soon changed, and he found that the Green Lantern ring was the ultimate expression of his imagination. While in battle, he often used the ring's power to create constructs of just about anything his artistic mind could imagine: other superheroes, anime characters, mystical characters, mechas, futuristic weapons and original characters from his comic books. While some questioned the practicality of those constructs, they often made Kyle an unpredictable opponent.
Wally West/The Flash
Wally West was the nephew of Iris West (and consequently, Barry Allen's nephew by marriage), and was introduced in The Flash vol. 1, #110 (1959). When West was about ten years old, he was visiting the Central City police laboratory that Barry Allen (Iris' boyfriend at the time) worked, and the freak accident that gave Allen his powers repeated itself, bathing West in electrically-charged chemicals. Now possessing the same powers as The Flash
Bruce Wayne/Batman
Batman's secret identity is Bruce Wayne, a billionaire industrialist, playboy, and philanthropist. Witnessing the murder of his parents as a child leads him to train himself to the peak of physical and intellectual perfection, don a bat-themed costume, and fight crime. Unlike most superheroes, he does not possess superhuman powers or abilities; he makes use of intellect, detective skills, science and technology, wealth, physical prowess, and intimidation in his war on crime.
Clark Kent/Superman
Superman is born Kal-El on an alien planet — later named Krypton — and is rocketed to Earth as an infant by his scientist father moments before the planet's destruction. The rocket lands on Earth, where he is found by passing motorists who adopt him and give him the name Clark Kent. As Clark reaches maturity, he learns he has superhuman abilities, which he resolves to use to help others, fighting anything from petty crime to universal threats. After adopting a costume consisting of a blue shirt with a stylized "S" on the chest, a pair of red briefs over blue pants, a pair of red boots, and a red cape, he becomes Earth's champion, with the media giving him several nicknames including "The Man of Steel", "The Man of Tomorrow", and "The Last Son of Krypton". To keep his identity secret when not fighting evil as Superman, Clark lives among humanity as a "mild-mannered" reporter for the Metropolis newspaper The Daily Planet (originally called the Daily Star). Clark works alongside reporter Lois Lane, with whom he is romantically involved (and whom he marries in the mainstream current comics' continuity).
Princess Diana/Wonder Woman
In most adaptations, Wonder Woman is Princess Diana of the Amazon warrior tribe of Greek mythology, "Diana" being the Roman name for the Greek goddess Artemis on whom the character is based. The Amazon ambassador to the larger world, Diana was awarded several gifts by the Olympian gods, including the Lasso of Truth (created from the Golden Girdle of Gaea) and indestructible bracelets/gauntlets (formed from the shield Aegis).
Zatanna
Zatanna is the daughter of magician John Zatara (who appears in Golden Age comic books) and Sindella, a member of the mystical “Homo Magi” race.
Zatanna usually dresses in the garb of a female illusionist, with tuxedo jacket, white vest and gloves, top hat, leotard and fishnet stockings. After becoming a full member of the Justice League, she appeared for some time in a more traditionally super-heroic red-and-blue spandex costume (possibly since fishnet stockings are also the trademark of the more well-known JLA member Black Canary), but has more recently returned to the tuxedo and fishnets, possibly in tribute to her late father's memory.
She has inherited her family's ability to cast powerful spells. Like her father, Zatanna does this by describing the desired effect in backwards speech (e.g., sdrawkcab hceeps or hceeps sdrawkcab), similar to Rechtub klat, the backwards slang of Australian butchers. Though historically her spells are constructed with only the spelling reversed but with the words in the correct order (Ym tfarcrevoh si lluf fo slee!), some writers have been known to reverse both spelling and words (Slee fo lluf si tfarcrevoh ym!). (Translation: My hovercraft is full of eels!)
Rarely a headlining character, Zatanna is a prominent consultant on paranormal matters for DC superheroes, and has been a longtime member of the Justice League. (Her immense power worries some Leaguers, though she has always been featured as a superheroine and never as a supervillainess.) She has been featured in the animated series Justice League Unlimited and the Flash animation series Gotham Girls.
Oliver Queen/Green Arrow
Dressed like Robin Hood, Green Arrow is an archer, who invents arrows with various special functions, such as a glue arrow, a net arrow, or a boxing-glove arrow.
Throughout his first twenty-five years, Green Arrow was not a significant hero. In the late 1960s, however, writers chose to have him lose his fortune, giving him the then-unique role of streetwise crusader for the working class and the underprivileged. In 1970, he was paired with the more law-and-order-oriented hero Green Lantern in a groundbreaking, socially conscious comic book series. Since then, he has been popular among comic book fans and most writers have taken an urban, gritty approach to the character.
Arthur Curry/Aquaman
Aquaman, also known as Arthur Curry, is an undersea hero from Atlantis. Born to a Atlantean wizard and an Atlantean Queen, he was raised by a human lighthouse keeper. In the most well-known version of his origin, Arthur Curry grows up slowly learning about his powers and origins and vows to defend the oceans and their inhabitants as Aquaman, becoming the ruler of Atlantis and the undersea world. Aquaman possesses the abilities to breathe underwater, telepathically communicate with and control all forms of sea life, and swim at fast speeds. He also possesses superhuman levels of strength, speed, endurance and durability, all by-products of his body being adapted to survive unprotected in the tremendous pressures of the ocean depths.
Carter Hall/Hawkman
Hawkman was Carter Hall, an archeologist who was the reincarnation of an ancient Egyptian prince. He and Hawkgirl used the same tools displayed in his museum to fight crime.
Like most Golden Age heroes, Hawkman disappeared from print after World War II. In the Silver Age, DC introduced new versions of several characters. The new Hawkman and Hawkgirl were police officers from the planet Thanagar who stayed on Earth to help human police forces, and the Justice League, deal with supervillains.
Since DC’s continuity was rewritten in the 1986 series Crisis on Infinite Earths, Hawkman’s history has become muddled with several new versions of the character appearing throughout the years, some associated with ancient Egypt and some with Thanagar. These versions of the character have starred in several short-lived series.
Ray Palmer/The Atom
During a spelunking expedition, Palmer and his friends found themselves trapped in the cave when the entrance collapsed. In desperation, Palmer secretly used the lens he carried with him to shrink himself down in order to be able to climb to a small hole high in the wall that led to the outside, knowing full well he would likely explode himself being so treated. Using a diamond engagement ring, he enlarged the hole sufficiently and descended to the floor to try alert the others of the escape route before dying. However, upon entering the lens' beam, he found himself returned to normal size. As the lens was covered with cave moisture, Palmer thought it altered the beam to allow this strange effect. When subsequent experiments showed no change with the explosions, Palmer concluded that there must be some mysterious force in his own body that allowed him to be shrunk safely and later returned to normal. He decided to use this effect to become a superhero.
Ray Palmer created a belt tool, from what was initially depicted as white dwarf star matter, which allows him to shrink down to subatomic size. Furthermore, he developed a special costume that he can wear at most times that only became visible when he shrunk signficantly. In addition, he developed new equipment that allowed him to instantly alter his molecular density to whatever degree he desired. This allowed him to glide on air currents on a low setting, while a high setting allowed him to handle or strike objects with the equivalent strength of his normal size and build. However, a favourite travel method he had was to call some location on the telephone and when the intended phone answered, Palmer could shrink down enough to literally travel through the phone lines in seconds to emerge out of the answering phone.
J'onn J'onzz/Martian Manhunter
J'onzz is a native of the planet Mars who possesses abilities similar to those of Superman, including flight, heat vision (sometimes called "Martian Vision", and inconsistently accompanied by a full Superman-like suite of vision powers), super-strength, and super-stamina. He also possesses the powers of invisibility, telepathy and shape-shifting; related to shape shifting is the power to alter his density or phase, thereby becoming intangible and able to pass through solid objects. His usual public appearance is of a tall, hairless, green-skinned humanoid with a pronounced brow. He is highly sensitive to fire; in some stories this weakness is a physical weakness, and in others it is purely psychological. Fire can affect him much as kryptonite does Superman, making him sick and weak, unable to use his various powers.
