Group Leader:

Our Goal
Public Allies' goal is to change the face and practice of leadership in communities across the country so that the next generation of American leaders will look like America will look, connect across cultures, facilitate collaborative action, recognize all of a community’s assets, commit to self development, and be accountable to the people they work with and serve. We believe that leaders practicing these values will create a more just society.

Our Core Values
We define our practice of leadership by five core values:

Collaboration: The ability to facilitate, negotiate, build consensus, build strong teams and empower others.

Continuous Learning: The ability to question assumptions and beliefs, understand strengths and shortcomings and commit to continued growth within a community context.

Diversity/Inclusion: The ability to work effectively and inclusively with different people and understand how to adapt to different cultures and environments.

Focus on Assets: The ability to catalyze the natural leadership of everyone, be truly accountable to those served and approach opportunities for change with awareness of community assets.

Integrity: The ability to meet commitments, act responsibly with public and personal trust, and be accountable for words and actions.

Our Mission
Public Allies' mission is to advance new leadership to strengthen communities, nonprofits and civic participation.

Our Program
Public Allies' signature AmeriCorps program identifies talented young adults from diverse backgrounds and prepares them for careers working for community and social change. Allies serve for 10 months in paid apprenticeships at nonprofit organizations in their communities and participate in a rigorous and rewarding leadership development program with a diverse group of peers working in their community.

Nonprofit Apprenticeship: Allies are placed in paid professional apprenticeships at local nonprofit organizations, where they are responsible for a project designed to positively impact the community. They work in fields such as youth development, community and economic development, public health and safety, civic participation and the environment.

Leadership Training: Allies participate in weekly workshops led by local community and civic leaders on topics such as public speaking, conflict resolution, diversity and oppression, community building and media relations.

Team Service Project: Teams of Allies collaborate to design and implement projects that benefit the community. Examples of past projects include creating a video about alternatives to incarceration, helping residents create a community garden and facilitating teen leadership programs.
