EWO is a project of American Friends Service Committee (www.afsc.org). As of April 2007, the exhibit contains over 3,300 pairs of boots. Although AFSC is a pacifist organization, the intent of the exhibit is to draw attention to the human cost of war, an experience that surpasses political debate. The national exhibit has visited over 100 cities and almost every state. EWO is co-sponsored by September 11th Families for a peaceful tomorrow. However, because of its current size, the national exhibit will be broken down into state exhibits this May when it will be shown for the last time in Chicago’s Grant Park from May 24-28, 2007. All but five states have already begun or have agreed to start state exhibits that will contain boots representing state-specific casualties.
