Five beautiful seventh-grade girls--Alison DiLaurentis, Spencer Hastings, Aria Montgomery, Emily Fields, and Hanna Marin--were one best friends. When Alison, the most beautiful and popular girl of them all, goes missing, the four others grow apart. Three years later, each girl gets notes, texts, emails, and IMs from someone whose nicknamed themself 'A'. Somehow, 'A' know all-- all of the secrets. From the worst secret--The Jenna Thing--to the tiniest secret, nothing is safe. Could 'A' be Alison? Not likely. Alison's body was found in the backyard of her old house, three years dead. So who IS 'A'?
Oh man, Spencer's got it hard. She used to be the study-hard, straight-A know-it-all. Now, she's known to her parents and sister, Melissa, as a bitch. She stole her sister's boyfriend, and her parents pretty much pretended she didn't live with them anymore. Spencer is sort of the reason Ali died. She and Alison got into a fight the night Ali went missing. Ali left the sleepover, and Spencer just wanted to think that she went home. After all, Alison lived next door to her. She's also the only one, besides Ali, that knows some incredibly awful about The Jenna Thing... and the secret might get out.
Hanna wants to seem flawless. After being called a pig by her own dad and perfect soon-to-be stepsister, she became bulimic. Not such a great way to loose weight, but it did get her size-2 jeans. After being dissed by her boyfriend, Sean Ackard, and stealing his car, plus getting caught shoplifting from Tiffany's, Dorktown is going to be her next residance. Thankfully, her mom "took care of it", let's just say having a slutty mom does pay off. Like mother, like daughter, too.
Once the model swimmer at Rosewood Day, Emily's fallen for Maya St. Germain, the new girl at school. Maya lives in Alison's old house... spooky. Maya likes Emily too, but there's one small problem, Maya's black and Emily's parents are extremely predjudice.
Aria fell for her English teacher at a bar. But she's not the only student falling for a teacher. Aria's dad, who's a teacher also, had an affair with one of HIS students. That was, of course, before they moved to Iceland, right after Alison's disappearance. When 'A' sends Aria a text and Ezra (her English teacher) reads it an takes it the wrong way, things are over. But for how long?
Alison was the most popular girl at Rosewood Day back in 7th grade, and she had Aria, Spencer, Hanna and Emily right by her. When one of these Pretty Little Liars had a secret, she didn't tell the others, she told Alison, because she could trust Alison. Well, surprise, Ali's dead and someone knows about everything that happened. Quoted from Sara Shepard's MySpace blog, "Ali didn't tell a soul-or did she?"
