Many members have grown up in the native culture but want to learn more about their family's history. Others have a family rumor of Native blood and would like to confirm it or need help getting documentation for tribal enrollment. All those who are researching Amerindian roots are welcome here.
There as SO many Americans that believe they have some Native American blood. I think it's great for people to get to their roots and created this group to help in that search. I must also state that, unless you have CONFIRMED that you, in FACT have Native blood, I feel that it is highly offensive to call yourself Native. In addition, you make a fool of yourself. I will help you in any way I can to get to the truth about your background, but, please don't call yourself something that you aren't. I encourage you, instead, to seek the truth and find pride in it.
How to get started
1) Get some
pedigree charts and maybe some family group sheets. They are available online for free (search for them) and print some out.
2) Speak to your living relatives, preferably the family elders, to find out everything you can about your ancestors. You need to know who they were, when and where they were born, married and died. You should also ask about all the names that person used in their lifetime. As you talk to them, fill in your pedigree chart and family group sheets IN PENCIL. Time blurs details, so, write everything IN PENCIL.
3) Once you have that done, you can start looking at actual records from that area to confirm the information you have. This step also includes looking at tribal rolls.
4) You then get information about previous generations and see how far up the tree you can climb!
