THE ISSUE
Let me first start by saying how truly amazed I am at how many of my peers have undertaken the position of a humanitarian. So many are getting involved in movements to
fight global warming, save rainforests & whales, help stop the killings in Darfur, support our troops, end poverty in other countries, and so on…
I think it is wonderful how many people are getting INVOLVED.
But I fear people are starting to look too far in regards of helping others.
I’m talking about Poverty in America.

*It is sad to know that there are so many organizations that are focused on going abroad and helping foreign nations with starving people. Dont get me wrong it is an amazing thing that they are doing, but why do they just focus on that when here in our own backyard there is more poverty than in most countries?

What’s the difference between a starving child in Africa & a starving child in America?

I’m not exactly sure why so many American’s are willing to donate money to help the starving children in Africa, and then when thanksgiving rolls around, donate one…maybe two cans to their local soup kitchen.

There are two possible reasons I can think of
1. People don’t realize just how much America is suffering in terms of poverty

2. They don’t care

Arrogance?
People are oblivious to the goings on of this country because they have not been presented with the issues , because it’s easier to think our nation is close to perfect….well it’s not.

Children in Poverty:
In France 9.8% of children live in poverty.
In the Netherlands 8.4% of children live in poverty.
In Sweden 3.8% live in poverty.
In America….26.3% live in poverty.
Help spread awareness on how backwards our government is on their focuses on what is priority and what is not. While we help those abroad, nearly a quarter of our nation lies in poverty. Learn to care.

The Smiths and their three girls have been living in this wooden lean-to in the Skid Row area of downtown Los Angeles. Keith Smith, with a high school diploma and two years of college, can’t find steady work. They alternate between motels and skid row to make their money last.
