The ASPCA was founded in 1866 as the first humane organization in the Western Hemisphere. The Society was formed to alleviate the injustices animals faced then, and we continue to battle cruelty today. Whether it’s saving a pet who has been accidentally poisoned, fighting to pass humane laws, rescuing animals from abuse or sharing resources with shelters across the country, we work toward the day in which no animal will live in pain or fear. Come and join us in the fight to end animal cruelty—become an ASPCA Member today!

We also support many groups besides ASPCA such as The Humane Society of the United States.

We're the Humane Society of the United States, the nation's largest and most powerful animal protection organization. Since 1954 we’ve been fighting to reduce their suffering, and eliminate cruelty and abuse. We celebrate the wonderful bond between humans and animals, and assist when disasters strike. We care about and strive to help all animals. The HSUS has many programs that help local animal shelters, as well as educational materials on pet ownership. Although cats and dogs are an important part of many of our families, there are so many more animals out there that need our – and your – help.
Do You Instant Message? Help save animals too!

So, you're in the market for a new dog? That's great! But if you're thinking of looking in a pet store or on the Internet, The Humane Society of the United States has an important warning for you.
Many puppies sold this way come from puppy mills, which force dogs to produce litter after litter just for profit. These dogs and their puppies are often plagued with suffering, resulting from disease, malnutrition, and loneliness.
The problem is that most people don't know that when they buy a puppy from these venues, they are often supporting a cruel and inhumane industry. But you can help by educating yourself and others about the reality of puppy mills.
"According to PA regulations, an adult Beagle can spend 12 years in a cage the size of your dishwasher...and never be let out."

Wearing fur or fur trim is cruel and unnecessary. Help save foxes, rabbits, and other furbearers from suffering in the name of "fashion" by signing the fur-free pledge. Whether caught in steel traps in the wild or anally electrocuted after life in a cage on a fur farm, these animals suffer immensely. When compassionate consumers like you take a stand against cruelty by refusing to purchase fur and fur trim, designers will stop using fur, retailers will stop selling it, and fashion writers will stop reporting on it as an acceptable trend. You have that power with every purchase you make.

Neutering will prevent your male pet from getting testicular cancer, will help prevent roaming, marking, and other unwanted behaviors that come along with the testosterone. Spaying your female will ensure that she will not suffer from pyometra (infection of the uterus), uterine cancer, and will greatly reduce the risk of mammory cancer! With all these benefits, it is hard to understand why so many people still fail to spay & neuter their pets!
Thousands of puppies and kittens are born every hour in the United States, and many will never find homes. Fortunately, spaying and neutering is a solution that we can all be a part of. It's simple, effective, and saves pets' lives for generations to come.
