Hello, and welcome to my Overeaters Anonymous MySpace Group! My name is Melissa, and I am the group leader/moderator. In case you are new to MySpace, You can read more about who I am by clicking on the hand image in the upper-right hand area of the screen, and visiting my page. In the interest of the group, I have not included anything about where I live.

PRIVACY SUGGESTION: If you decide to join this group, I recomend that you set your personal photos to "private" so that only your friends can see them. I also recomend that you use a default photo that does not display your face. The reason I recomend this is because OA does support the privacy and anonymity of its members, and I would like to do the same for the people in this group. But since this is a completely independent group, and since people at a live meeting would see you, the decision to show your picture or is ultimately yours.

A Little About OA:

Overeaters Anonymous (OA) offers a program of recovery from compulsive overeating using the Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions of OA. Worldwide meetings and other tools provide a fellowship of experience, strength and hope where members respect one another’s anonymity. OA charges no dues or fees; it is self-supporting through member contributions.

Unlike other organizations, OA is not just about weight loss, obesity or diets; it addresses physical, emotional and spiritual well-being. It is not a religious organization (although you are welcome to incorporate your faith, if you like) and does not promote any particular diet. To address weight loss, OA encourages members to develop a food plan with a health care professional and a sponsor. If you want to stop your compulsive eating, Overeaters Anonymous is the way to go!

OA is also modeled after other "Anonymous" groups, such as: Alcoholics Anonymous (AA), Gamblers Anonymous (GA) and Narcotics Anonymous (NA), etc. In addition to online support, OA very much encourages you to locate and attend live meetings, if possible. You can find a meeting in your area by clicking on the appropriate bulletin near the bottom of this page, and copying the given link into your web address bar. There, on the right, you will find a search engine for meetings near you.

Of course, getting support here in our MySpace Group is helpful as well, since you can come here any time, of any day! Here, you can discuss all aspects of weight loss, and view a list of the “12 Steps and Traditions” of the program. There are also useful links to other Overeaters Anonymous web pages!

Once again, welcome to our group, and have fun!

GROUP RULES:

First and foremost, we ask that everyone please give the utmost respect to all the other members of this group. For now, this group will be public (meaning anyone with a Myspace acocunt can join, and anyone with the internet can view its contents). So for your safety, please do not list your last name or personal contact information in this forum, as unwanted persons may get a hold of it. Also, harassment (continuing to do things that offend or make others uncomfortable, after you‘ve been asked to stop), insults, disrespect, name calling, etc., is not allowed. Anyone violating the rules will be given a warning, and the offensive topic or reply will be deleted. If a user or member continues to offend the members of this group after their warning, they will be banned from the group. If someone is bothering you outside the group, we recomend that you block that person from contacting you, and report them to MySpace. Also, "troll" behavior (posting comments for the purpose of starting an argument or getting everyone all worked up) is not allowed. Abusers will be banned, and again, the offensive topic will be deleted. Please report any spamming (advertisements, personal adds, etc.), as well as any user abuse or rule violations to the group moderator, so that the appropriate action can be taken.

PLEASE NOTE: We understand that overeating, as well as the causes/reasons for it, is a controversial subject for a few people. We understand that some have conflicting opinions as to WHY people overeat, and everyone is entitled to their opinion. But the people of Overeaters Anonymous believe that overeating is a very real and powerful addiction, just like the addictions to Alcohol and Narcotics. OA is devoted to helping people overcome this addiction through support and guidance. This is OA’s main focus, and approach. We ask that anyone visiting this group please keep this in mind before you join or post in here, and that you respect OA’s approach to weight loss. Thank you.
