"To nenn or not to nenn, there lies the doubt."

The aim of this group is to promote the icelandic word "nenna" to the extent that it will integrate with the english language.

The word applies to the specific emotion of not wanting to do something for no specific reason. The meaning of it can not be sufficiently substituted with phrases like "I don’t feel like it", "I can’t be bothered to" or "I don’t want to" as they do not specify the distinct unspecifiedness (which is another word we might push for in the future) that the word nenna captures so simply and beautifully. You can argue all you want, sometimes you just don’t nenn it.

The word has been used in Iceland for centuries, in fact the icelandic dictionary cites as an example of how the word is used "Ég nenni ekki að drepa hann" which translates to english "I don’t nenn to kill him" suggesting that the word was originated during the viking era.

Other common uses that we envision for it in english are:

"I don’t nenn to go to you’re funeral."

"Do you nenn to go with me to the movie someday?" "No I don’t nenn to, but maybe she nenns it" "Ok, I’ll ask!" "So did she nenn?" "No she nenntn’t" (or... nouldn’t, ok, perhaps in that case you’d be better just go with "no she didn’t nenn")

"I’m not nenning to do the dishes" or "I’m just totally not nenning to give you cpr"

"Do you nenn to feed the monster?" or for a more simple version "Nenn you feed the monster?" (Icelandic: "nennirðu að gefa sigga að borða)

It might be a difficult task to successfully infiltrate the english language with a new word, but we believe in the power of the word and recognize the raw human need for expressing this simple emotion. Without it, the feeling of nenning and not nenning must be repressed and apparently, all that can follow is war, poverty and pollution. Yes, it will be hard, yes we will face challenges along the way, yes we may even face ridicule for our conviction, but we have decided that "Yes We Nenn!"
