Group Leader:

This group mainly focuses on discussing and (trying to) change the mass media's way of bashing whoever can be bashed for quotes and money. Chris Crocker sums it up (in a, let's face it, embarrassing way) in "Leave Britney alone".

We - the public - do not need to know that Britney Spears held her baby upside down, that Yosuke Kubozuka may smoke pot, that Amy Winehouse plays with baby mice. Some of us want to know, some of us because they got no life, some because they need a reminder that others are even more miserable, some swines need to know so they can make money out of it, and very few want to know because they honestly care. And in favor of honesty, I only care in one single case and all the others can kiss my arse. I want to know how I can slow down global warming, not how Britney Spears did her hair.

Why care about Britney and Paris Hilton for example? Let's face it, they're boring. They're rich, famous and decadent, Britney is unstable and on drugs, but how many other people in this world are? Millions. Is it that important that we know that Amy Winehouse was drunk last night?

No.

But it does keep us from thinking about and questioning more important things: why voices of doubt about the 9/11 attacks are silenced, why police doesn't crack down on forced prostitution, how to slow down the serious threat of global warming, HOW TO STOP THE MASS MEDIA FROM BRAINWASHING US BY DECIDING WHAT WE KNOW AND HOW WE THINK!

What the media is currently telling us, is:
-get an eating disorder
-don't fall in love before age 18 and
-give in to outside pressure
-be a dumb sheep in the herd
-Paris Hilton is more important than Barack Obama

This is sick. And dangerous. On the long run, our minds will be poisoned to the point we will no longer see the injustice, the destruction, the corruption, the crumbling of our world.
Let's leave Amy Winehouse alone, she's just another junkie who needs help by people close to her. We can't do shit. We CAN however, get energy-efficient light bulbs and listen to the voices of intelligent, revolutionary minds. It only requires more brain cells than making fun of Paris Hilton does.

Celebrity press is fun and we do need a bit of entertainment. But shouldn't we still stick to a certain moral code involving honesty, moderation and avoiding humiliation for the celebrity in question? Can we not just report on eg. a singer's career, and maybe point out a few mishaps, without blowing up every imperfection? Items about actors should be about the film business, items about singers should be about music. Drugs, family, dumb remarks etc., should be a by-product, not a focus.

A few possible activities most of us can engage in:
-make your own Youtube news show, webzine, etc. and discuss important things, even if they're limited to your neighbourhood
-comment on items of mass-dumbing stating the essence of this group: "this is irrelevant, leave this person alone and talk about more important issues"
-post and help spread more important news than celebrity gossip
-not pay attention to the size, but the contents and its meanings of headlines
-Question. Aloud.
-DO NOT INVEST MONEY IN BRAINWASHING MEDIA (which focus on celeb gossip, biased point of view, inspire life-threatening behavior such as eating disorders or smoking, promote war and exploitation, deny true threats, invent fictional threats (homosexuality, occult fiction, cartoon violence, goth & emo), tell you to buy buy buy or to avoid certain minorities, and so on).

And click-funded mass-dumbing media should be completely avoided. After logging out from Potmail, better not click any news items. It's infotainment, with more entertainment than useful info. No, we can not apply the "What women expect of men" to all women out there, and yes, it is sexist. Do not want.

To make one thing clear: we are not telling people how to think or act. We make suggestions and the only thing we tell people to do, is:

Use your own damned brain.
