The YESS Institute is a 501(c)(3) not for profit organization which runs after school peer mentoring programs for at-risk youth in Denver, CO. We are dedicated to developing leadership and emotional intelligence skills within youth, their role models and the organizations that support them.
We are seeking to give our youth the ability to break the heartbreaking cycle of poverty and violence that perpetuates gang activity and high dropout rates by providing them with the skills to become leaders in their communities. We encourage them to discover their passions to see the world in a positive light.
The ultimate change is seen through looking at our students at the beginning of our program and again at the end. We begin with adolescents who initially do not believe in themselves; who feel incapable of achieving their goals. After being involved in our program students identify their goals and dreams and take strides to achieve them. Students' overall self-confidence increases, resulting in personal and academic fulfillment.
The benefits of mentoring in the words of previous mentors:
" I learned that young people have problems that can change their future just in a moment (because of bad choices they make), that unfortunately sometimes people around them, and even their family is not enough to make them have sufficient confidence about themselves. And that with a good attitude and working together (the mentor and the mentee), change in both lives is created."
"That my coming into the program helps make a difference in a young child's life."
"I learned that you can't judge a book by its cover. These kids are great and there are a lot of other kids out there that need help and a little attention. All of the kids i had the pleasure of meeting were great and i can't wait to be a part of the program next year."
"That the actions we take make a difference in this world - even if unnoticed and the results are not visible."
"I learned to listen to other peoples' opinions and try to help. Also that you can learn from your mentee, not just teach them."
