ABOUT THE ARTIST

My Mission Statement, My Art:

[Expanded version on my blog: http://jslbydesign.wordpress.com/ Thank you for your interest.]

Intrinsically, the human experience revolves around relation… relation with one’s self, relation with others, even relation with the very ground on which one stands. It is a relationship based upon perimeters and boundaries. Our very language is based off these delineations.

My work is about breaking defined structures and capturing the true, ineffable quality that is human experience. My expression reaches to capture the shades between the borders.

The world is not black and white. It is all about color. My life goal is to use every method and medium possible to articulate each of those hues and different values. Maybe people will find a little bit of themselves in my process of exploration... that would be lovely.

Bio:

Jennifer S. Levine spent her childhood trapped in books, museums and all other curiosity to feed her imagination or get paint under her nails. When most teens would run into mischief with their first set of car keys, Ms. Levine would run to the DMA (Dallas Museum of Art) or fourth floor of the Dallas Public Library.

It was on one such visit to the art museum that Ms. Levine realized her calling.

Jennifer S. Levine was spending a summer afternoon studying and sketching her favorite painting at the DMA. Perched on a bench in deep reverie, she was startled when a shrill voice interrupted her.

"Yel-low!"

She looked up to see a mother pushing a stroller with a little boy at her side. The mother was young. The children were not a day over two and seven. They walked slowly from painting to painting and crossed half the room before Ms. Levine heard their conversation.

"Now, how do you think that little boy feels?" the mother asked.

The boy paused, then answered, "Sad."

"Good answer. Why do you think that?"

"His lips..." the voice trailed off.

With that brief exchange between a mother and child, Jennifer S. Levine knew she wanted a little boy to someday learn lessons about life and color from her work as well. She has been pursuing that dream ever since.

Jennifer S. Levine has studied at The University of North Texas, The University of Denver and completed a glass blowing apprenticeship. She believes in autodidactic living; the day one stops learning, one should stop breathing. Ms. Levine spends her free time traveling, visiting more museums, reading and developing a book she has been writing.
