Freida is a 24 year old, wife and mother of 3 who also has brain cancer.
In May of 2004, during her first pregnancy, she was diagnosed with a non-operable brain tumor that was an astrocytoma. A biopsy was done and the results seemed to hold a silver lining, it wasn't cancerous. Over the next year or so she went to her scheduled MRI's so that the tumor could be watched to be sure it wasn't making any drastic changes that would require further actions. Over the next few years, Freida would have two more children.
With the needs of their growing family, combined with the rising costs of health care and neccessities like food and fuel, their health insurance was no longer affordable and had to take a backseat to providing food shelter and clothing for the family.
In November of 2008 she scheduled an MRI, only to find out that her tumor had doubled in size. The next few months were spent making arrangements so that surgery could be arranged. In April of 2009, Freida's surgeon had decided that the tumor had grown to an unhealthy size. Weeks later the surgery was performed, 95% of the tumor was safely removed without damaging any of her essential motor functions.
The recovery went very quickly, out of the hospital and back home in 4 days. The neuro-surgeon informed her that she would be contacted by an oncologist, so he could explain to her the radiation process they wanted to use to shrink the remaining piece of tumor that resided in her head. On the day of the appointment, the oncologist informed Freida, that the segment removed in the biopsy of 2004, and the mass removed in the surgery in 2009 were in fact the same grade and type of tumor. They both tested positive for cancer and that the treatment comes along with some negative long-term effects.
The radiation will be starting very shortly, with not having insurance, this is going to be a difficult time for Freida and the family. The treatment is going to be 45 minutes per day, 5 days per week, for a period of 6 weeks. During which time she will become very ill, requiring lots of extra help with daily life, as well as taking care of the three children.
