Iran's presidential election has turned into a coup d'etat, stolen by Ahmadinejad, their former president. The popular candidate, reformist Mir-Houssein Mousavi, has been imprisoned in his house, but the rest of Iran has erupted into riots. Mousavi has asked his supporters to peacefully protest the results as false, which anonymous government workers have confirmed. Mousavi's asked his people to stay nonviolent; Ahmadinejad has made no such request. People have already died in the riot, from being gunned down unarmed to being beaten to death, and/or blocked from hospitals by police.

This isn't getting the coverage it should. That's partially because the only reliably-functioning communication channel in Iran is Twitter. Other outlets, like newspapers, texting, television, and websites, have fallen under the control of Ahmadinejad's Revolutionary Guard.

The most important thing that we, outside of Iran, can do, is spread awareness. They will need a whole lot of help once the situation has calmed down enough for relief organizations to move in; it'll be a lot easier to organize help for humanitarian aid and relief efforts if more people know about what's going on. And while we can't do much now, at the very least, we can spread the word. And the best way to draw attention to the courage and determination of Iran's citizens is some sort of visible sign of support.

That's why I'll be wearing something green, Mousavi's campaign color, until the Iranian people have the election results they voted for. I invite you all to join me. Wear something green, a shirt, a hat, shoes, a scarf, even if it's just a piece of ribbon, and spread the word. These people are fighting for their freedom. The least we can do is recognize it.
